Late in the WGA Picnic day, Ruth (BnB) and I decided to go find the jthorson caches. (They are always so original and mystifying – what will he come up with next?) We did have a good time finding them – and continued to hike into the woods for more - when we were approached by two girls on bikes. They needed help for their friend who had crashed her bike and could not walk.

Ruth and I hiked on to find Sarah on the ground with her sister standing nearby. I determined that Sarah’s neck and back were not injured but that she really did NOT want to walk. Both legs were hurting and she had a scraped ankle. She could rotate and flex her ankles without too much pain. Her eyes looked clear.

So, we loaded her onto my back – piggyback style and we hoofed it out to my truck. About a mile according to my measured track. Ruth pushed the bike out as the other 3 girls followed. Stopped twice after getting to the top of some hills, and I was sure glad that Ruth had water! We even showed the girls - ‘Hang’ – a geocache of great merit as we passed by.

Ruth, Sarah and I drove back to the Group Campsite near our Picnic to find her Dad and unload the bike. Sarah was quite stoic throughout, and was happily reunited although she still could not walk.

All this and we just made it back in time for the group photograph. We felt that this had to be the most worthwhile find of the day!

Don't salute me at all. Cachew did all the work. I worried on the way out that one of the other girls would get injured (since twice they fell off their bikes) and I would not be able to help with a carry out. (I have since tried with my own 62 pound daughter and decided I could do a short, level hike but nothing like a uphill hike that Cachew did).

I think it is worth noting that when we passed Hanging Chad, Cachew walked back to the location of the cache to show Sarah what the cache looked like. I know that if I had been carrying someone I would not have been so accommodating to retrace my steps.

The most ironic part of this journey is that when we went out it was with the intent to do some "easy" caches. Just goes to show that the cache is not always what you think it will be.

We heard mention of the hike after our late return to the shelter...we were walking out to the end of the earth at the time of the "easy cache hike"...didn't get the complete story until reading this thread.
It's so humbling to hear about these types of things.

We've known Cachew for a while and have spent a lot of time w/ him and his family on a personal level, so this doesn't surprise us one bit. This is a man with a bad ankle of his own, in need of a cane to walk through most caching adventures. It doesn't surprise me one bit to hear that he put aside his own pain (and don't let him lie to you folks...he was in pain!) on behalf of another...not a surprise to me at all!!!

Having done Jeff's caches earlier in the day, we know what kind of hills they were walking. BLAH!!!

I'm glad that everone returned safely! Thanks Ruth for hanging in there w/ John! You think you didn't do anything, but I'm willing to bet that your presence alone was a comfort to the carrier of the human backpack. And I KNOW he loves his water!!! (Hey Col...looks like we may have a new watergirl... Image...)

Thanks for helping the girls out you two! Where do you find the icon for "cache in, crash out?"

MajorBrat
