With spring and summer around the corner more caching will take place and more caches are likely to be placed. This subject came up in 2004 and I wanted to bring it back up so people are aware and informed.
There is and will more than likely always be controversy over Travel Bug Hotels.
My personal feeling is I like Travel Bug Hotels for they CAN be a great place to make drops on a trip or pick up some new ones. I typically trade TB for TB. Now and then if I see that several TBs have stayed in a cache for a long period of time (this based on bug stay and # of visitors) I might very well take 2+ TBs.
I feel TBs are set out by their owners to travel and fulfill their goal(s). The general “take one leave one” I think is a nice courtesy but have to draw the line when the hotel has minimum # restrictions for trading or occupancy. The cache is yours the TBs are not.
As a perfect example I travel to Pensacola, FL here and there and typically visit a TB hotel to make drops and pick up Tbs for travel back to here. On my last visit I only dropped one TB yet took 4. It did not completely empty the hotel but close. While the cache was being visited frequently the 4 TBs I took kept being passed over and had a stay ranging from 2-3 months in that hotel. By the time I got back to WI I received emails from all 4 owners thanking me for getting their TB moving again.
Like I said with the coming of a new season of caching I ask people who have Travel Bug Hotels are considering making one to remember the TBs are not yours to control. I certaily would not want my TBs to end up in what is refered to as a Travel Bug Prison.

I have to agree with you. My kids have a hard enough time waiting for their bugs to move in regular caches, I can't imagine them being stuck in a "take one only if you leave one" environment. We'll be heading to OH next month....there is a bug hotel near our house. Should I go grab a bunch for the ride? I'm not sure.... I'll probably contact the cache owner for their opinion on the matter (they aren't my bugs and it isn't my cache). PQ

We own a TB hotel. It states on our cache page "take one, leave one". However, we do not get upset, mad etc if someone visits and takes a TB or two to move on without leaving any. We understand the purpose of TBs is too keep moving - not to be kept hostage.
We wrote that 'rule' so hopefully, there will always be a TB in there if someone comes by.

I own a bug hotel too. I filled mine with bugs from all around. Not necessarily from other hotels, but from other caches. I think they are a great place for people to meet up and find TBs that need help getting further on their missions. Sure....it's nice having a bunch to choose from in there, but if people wan to take one without leaving one, they can.
I also leave trade items in mine, so that those who may want to follow suite, but don't have a TB, they can at least have somethig to trade out. I do this moreso for the lil kids. Their lil hearts are broken if there isn't SOMETHING in there for them to trade.
