Wow. Just wow. Where's the outrage?

Having just done a B&G this week that was two months of planning to get each detail perfect, well...well I don't quite know what I would do.

This is really proof about how mobs can have the general public by the short hairs. Talk about "not having a voice"! Mad

This may play well on TV but this is not playing well at the kitchen tables of people who have to go to work, if they even still have a job.

My wife and I are retired educators and obviously have been following the events in Madison closely. We both worked for the same school district for 33 and 31 years, respectively, before retiring in 2005. The pensions we receive today come from the Employee Trust Fund. The district for which we worked made contributions to that fund on our behalf throughout our careers. Incidentally, our pensions have been cut the last 2 years (and probably will be cut again this year) due to the stock market crash from which we are still recovering. The state's budget issues, however, are not a result of our pensions, nor are they a result of the salary and other benefits we received when we were teaching. Our collective bargaining agreement was between our union and our local school district, not with the state.

A career in teaching was a choice we made years ago. It provided us with a lot of job satisfaction and a comfortable, middle-class lifestyle. However, we knew we wouldn't get rich when we went into it. Yes, we were blessed with some solid benefits and a decent salary (we started at around $10,000/year, though). Unless you're Bill Gates, there are always going to be people who make more than you or have better benefits than you, but that doesn't make them the enemy. We all made a choice as to our line of work, and if some other pursuit appears better, then we can make the choice to change if we really want to do that.

Of course, we support the people protesting in Madison, but we also have a problem with the school closings. The kids should come first. On the other hand, the state does mandate a certain number of "face to face" days each year and we feel confident that these missed days will have to be made up at the end of the year. We also feel that the vast majority of teachers will feel this is reasonable.

To sum up, we all know that times are tough, but the issue here is the potential loss of collective bargaining rights, not reductions in salary or benefits. This has ramifications far beyond any budget deficits that need to be reduced. These comments will probably rub some the wrong way, but before you respond against teachers, take a few minutes to read and think about this:

Two sandlanders are not going to work today. We are sitting on our butts enjoying our cushy pensions as retired teachers. Rolling Eyes

That was my last snarky remark on the subject.

I started a new thread on the budget repair bill and Madison protests to get some of the non-drivel to its own spot to be added to or to be ignored. My posting diet is to reduce my average of posts per day, so even though I made a "seven-course meal" post over there, it's still just one post.

I'm up to three posts today. I need to stay at seven or below.

On with the drivel!!!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Today I think. But I'll admit I'm not too crazy about it for members. I think the Board Member is an interesting idea, but even there it seems to give the impression that the opinion is board related and not the cacher's.

Maybe a nice small icon next to the name would be a little less intrusive. But considering the norm is "WGA Member", I'd suggest only providing it for the Board and maybe non-members.

I was caught by surprise by this also. Maybe I have to get use to it. I'm going to ponder it for a few days... I do like the board members having one.

I think that guests can post. I seem to remember a cacher from Rapids posting in the forums that wasn't a member.
