Since I would like to have our applications in the mail by the end of March, we need to choose a SE Highway Segment quickly. We will need to put three choices down in case one of them is no longer available by the time we submit our application. I'm not exactly sure how to go about this so lets try this approach first.
I have a listing of all the available Highway segments sorted by county.
Here are the counties involved and the number of (approximately 2-mile) segments available:
Kenosha - 3
Milwaukee - 5
Ozaukee - 9
Racine - 30
Walworth - 24
Washington -7
Waukesha - 18
All Highway segments are US or WI State Highways expect for 4 segments of I-43 in Ozaukee County.
I would like to narrow the list down to two or three counties to consider, then we'll whittle down the lists from there.
Vote for your county choice by posting your preference(s) below! |

Our vote would be for Racine--far northside--so it's accessible for Kenosha and Milwaukee people as well (as well as our friends in northern IL that visit often)
If Racine gets chosen, we'd be happy to help narrow down the choices of highways in the list by accessibility to all and need for attention. Just let us know. |

For the SE counties lets say we move it either to the western edge of Milwaukee or Racine. That way the folks in Walworth, Ozuakee and Washington counties can still participate and not have to drive to far to help out.
This is our 2 cents. |

I'd vote for Northern Racine and Southern Milwaukee counties. Once the counties are selected a segment could be selected that would hopefully be travel friendly for all.
I would be willing to help anyway I can. |

Racine County is nicely centralized and right on the I-94 corridor. Plus it seems to have the most choice for available roads.
(Personally, I would rather have Waukesha cuz it is closest to me but since I am not technically in SE WI, I don't think my vote should really count.) |

OK, sounds like Racine County will be at least one of our choices...
I've posted a .pdf file below that has the openings for Racine County. Let's try to narrow that down to one, two or three by the end of the week. Go ahead and make suggestions below.
If there are other counties or preferences, I can post them as well; but this is a great start!
Something to keep in mind is that much of the work (as far as what needs to happen at the location we end up choosing) is already done by the DOT. There is a workplan that we will need to follow for the locations we choose that will detail everything from where we start, to where to park, to what signage and other safety issues may be present in that particular stretch of highway.
Thanks for the input so far! Keep it coming! |

Now that I was finally able to view the file (couldn't open it, had to save it to view it), I have a few quick notes. In trying to make sure it's accessible to many, I would quickly delete those on Hwy 31, 32, 11, and 142. The 31 and 32 ones are too close to the lake, and the Hwy 11 and 142 ones are too far south for the rest of the counties.
I'll have to do some mapping on the others to see how accessible they are. One very easy one is Hwy 20 from I-94 to 90th Street as it's right off I-94. Some of the Hwy 36 and 45 ones may be good too as they are west. |

Let's put the Hwy20 I94 to 90th segment on our list then.
Any other suggested areas in Racine County or any other counties anyone would like to nominate? |

In the interest of being more centrally located, I would suggest either Hwy 36 from S Wind Lake Road to the N county line (51-036-14) or Hwy 83 from Loland Drive to the W County Line. Remember that our region includes Washington, Waukesha, and Ozaukee Counties. I just think that the Hwy 20 suggestion is too far South and East. The 36 section is pretty much near the center of the region geographically, although something in Western Milwaukee county/Eastern Waukesha County would be closer to the true center. |
