I was at the National Storytelling Conference in St. Louis this past weekend, and yes, the workshops and stories are great, but the BEST part of these events is seeing old friends. One of my good storytelling buddies from Des Moines was there, and she wanted to go check out this clothing store she's ordered from for years. She's always trying to reform my ratty clothing habits, but the jewelry is the only place she can tempt me! So we had some free time, plugged the address into her new Garmin Nuvi........
Two hours later, we finally made it to the store "only 15 minutes away!"
The stupid GPSr was telling us all manner of weird directions, often punctuated by "please make a u-turn as soon as possible," and "reconfiguring." I half expected it after the third or fourth u-turn to say "Sucker!"
Maureen had just gotten this thing and was lamenting the fact that she has about six signature stories that involve getting lost and now she wouldn't have new material. Ha! I told her the GPS was going on the floor out of sight and called the store. They gave us some directions, adding, "We're having a big sale, too!"
Maureen kept saying, "I'd better spend 500 bucks after all this!" We made one more phone call after getting lost again and realized too late that the ladies giving us directions kept interchanging "left" for "right."
She did not spend that much money, but got what she wanted. I asked at the counter for directions back to the hotel, because we had been all over that side of St. Louis several times and I didn't trust that Garmin!
It took us 15 minutes.
Maybe she needed to buy a Magellan! At least she has new story material.
