Here is a challenge; I need some ideas on a worthy cache to do for my 4000 cache find. There are some requirements;
1) I don’t want to here manmade sounds
2) Needs to have a view, five, ten miles or more, but a good view of a lake, bog, falls or marsh will also do.
3) A hike, longer the better
4) A traditional or multi, regular size cache.

Is there a cache or two like this within a reasonable distance of southern Wisconsin? Upper Michigan is reasonable. Bring it on.[/list]

Hi Natloh,

I would suggest Felsenmeer Ridge, which is GC10G67. It is about a mile walk, with a bit of a poorly maintained cross country ski trail, but mostly bushwhack. It is a very scenic walk, and when ya get to the final, ya got an easy find with an awesome view of at least 10 miles of the Blue Hills. Seth and I were there a couple weeks ago, and we saw lots of wildlife, including bear scat. As an added bonus, there is a real interesting Pipestone Quarry along the way, which is a small pit where native Americans dug up a pipestone to make their peace pipes with. The Pipestone is a soft red/purple sandstone. Jenhen placed the cache, and if you do all 3 caches from the parking area, you will walk about 2.5 miles roundtrip, have a great time, see the historic pipestone quarry and end up with the long view you mention. There are no road noises or man made noises at all, though we did hear a chain saw off in the distance at one point.

Felsenmeer Ridge is near Rice Lake, in the Blue Hills. If you go for that one, you should also go for GCGJT9, which is the Blue Hills Devil's Kettle, which is a shorter walk, and without the great view. But what ya do get is a visit to a unique geological formation off of the beaten path, and again, it is a bushwhack to a hidden gem, and is the very essence of a great geocache.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I will try to do most in the next year, if the price of gas keeps dropping. This Saturday I am going to do “HOT TROT” ‘GC145Q’ ‘HKVR – HILO’ cache for my 4000th find. I plan on being at the start 9:00 – 9:30 and your all welcome to join me for a little seven mile walk in the park.

You will work hard, but it will be worth it. It's an awesome cache. Congratulations on this impressive landmark!

Looks like an excellent choice. The pictures from mama-splash, imjedi & trekkin' and birdin' were great. Had trouble locating from natloh2's log, so here's a link: GC145QH KVR - HILO
