Anyone else up here notice the mosquitos being way worse than the last few years? I was placing a couple new caches last night and every time I would stop walking literally hundreds of them would swarm me. Down by a small lake I could hear an audible buzz in the air all around, perhaps the buzz of millions of the little suckers? Had to reapply DEET numerous times.

They just won't let up!!!

They are obviously worse this year.

However, I think we have forgotten what they were like in the past. The last several years we have been in a drought. As a result of the lack of rain, we've become spoiled by conditions which have been unfavorable for mosquitoes.

When I was at the Ice Age Center last weekend, the volunteer/guide told us that it is the worst he remembered in his many years of living in the area (I'm guessing 50+ years). Two other, older, guys I met later said the same thing. I was turned away - just 70 feet from the cache - from a FTF because I couldn't stand the deer flies anymore. I no longer had bug spray so was relying on the residual affects of the previous application. It wasn't enough.

However, for mosquitoes, I have experienced worse at my house than this year.

They must be south of 29.... not too bad up here.. normal or less. WE were at the family cabin this week and there were a few but not as many as there usually are. Maybe the bug zapper really works....

Nope. I pretty sure all of the places mentioned in the posts were 20+ miles north of 29. Consider yourself lucky. Or, your "normal" is pretty horrible, in which case I don't think you're lucky. Smile

Mosquitoes have been bad in our area as well - even in town. They are nothing like deer flies though............. When I was placing a cache in Dodge my son and I drove through the park, all of the way back into this field and stirred up some deer flies. We had the windows closed and had about 20 deer flies at each window following us at 10 mph! I said it doesn't matter if I see the perfect beacon, there is no way I am getting out of this car. So when you go for that walk it really is the same 5 flies buzzing around you for the entire trip.
