Did this cache three years ago but it's one of those that I would love to return to. Thinking about making a snowshoe trip this week. Anybody interested in hiking along let me know. Could be talked into a later January trip also if that works better.

Looks like a fun cache for this time of year. Unfortunately, I don't know when I will be up that way. I added it to my watch list.

What are you all afraid of crocodiles???? The ones out there are pretty friendly but they hibernate in the winter.

Looks like this Saturday, January 3rd. Mrs. OPS is now planning on going (might even get the trail breakers- ahem, kids to go) and any others are welcome. With a fresh packed trail and somebody who has already found the cache going: well, this cache will never get easier than that...

Okay, we need a time. Morning?

Let's try for 9:00AM? We're flexible on time so just throwing that out there for a start. We have a several extra pairs of snowshoes we can lend also. Two small pair (any size foot but less square inches), but would probably be fine for folks not bustin' the way in. One homemade PVC pair my son made in scouts that nobody- including him- has ever used. Could be fun to watch someone (perhaps mathman?) try those. Rolling Eyes

I'm interested. Perhaps k0rpl or others from the Valley would be also.

I can arrange for my own snowshoes.

9 AM start is probably good.

We're in! We'll be there with our own snowshoes at 9AM. I was thinking we'd like to do this one soon, anyway. Although THB and Mrs. TE claim we're being wusses doing it now. They apparently went when the crocodiles were more active.

I had my turn with S4!

Looking forward to this. Can someone shoot me a phone number to call in case weather issues prevent us from traveling?

I would like to be in, but I probably won't know for a couple maybe three days yet. I will have to research my needs for some challenges that I may be able to work on on the way up or back home. Also, my wifes car is going in the shop today and I don't know when we will get it back yet. I will let you know as time nears.

Which parking coordinates should be our meeting spot? I noticed there are a couple options.

We will meet at parking option #3

N 44 38.607 W 089 33.038

OPS will be there before 8:30 AM and will provide hot apple cider and hot water for coffee/ hot chocolate from 8:30- 9:00. We will leave as close to 9:00 AM as folks can get geared up for the hike (and finish their drink). wink

As far as folks giving you a hard time for going for this cache this time of year. Well, just tell them this is the proper time of year to visit this fragile ecosystem (how can they argue with that?). Or, invite them to break trail for us Saturday...

Is anyone planning on hitting other caches in the area? If so, which ones?

If we're not exhausted- and if there has been nobody back in there and we have to bust trail all the way to the cache I suspect exhaustion- we would head south to Point and try a few. We've been out as recently as yesterday afternoon and the snow is DEEP in the woods. If you're not exhausted and want more snowshoe caching I've started this bookmark. As far as what caches we would try- probably start out in the area of GC15Z18 Fern Swamp and GC1F58N Green Bean Cacherole (cuz it's been found recently).

I've been looking at aerial photos of the cache trying to remember exactly how I routed back there and I noticed an interesting pine planting about half way from parking #3 to the cache. Not sure if they were attempting to create a symbol or if they were just goofing around on planting day. Mapquest or Yahoo have the best maps, look for a long diagonal of pines SW to NE, and then just south of that is a sort-of five sided figure with planted lines running through the middle. I suspect it may be the site of the old farmhouse that is mentioned by a previous cacher "I lived in an old farmhouse about half way to the cache when I was a student at UWSP in 1968-70. The homestead was removed in the early 70's when the DNR purchased the land. There are 15 foot trees growing in the old home site." Interesting anyway...

We haven't found Green Bean Cacherole, and I have three solved puzzles in Point to find, plus a handful of others.

The puzzles solved are...

It's Your Call
On Point|River Rats
The Doctor Visits

Not sure if the protocol for these allows group finds or not!

There are three along the Green Circle Trail near the airport we need to find, too.
