Now that we must drive a bit of a distance to get to a "cache cluster" to do any caching, I'm thinking of picking up some benchmarks to tide us over in the meantime. Image However, if one has ever done or read about benchmarks, one knows they can be on the top of church spires, water towers, or other legally inaccessible places.

The question is,(i.e.) if I go to the benchmark that says it's on a water tower, the water tower is there but I don't actually witness the physical benchmark disk, can I still claim it as a find, or do I need to be a city utility worker to be able to claim those types? Image

Any suggestions or help/comments are appreciated.

Benchmarks are not always disks...The item you are looking for is decribed in the detail...therefor if it describes a watertower, that is the benchmark. Take a pic of you and the tower and log it.

Its just that simple...Looking for the disks and monuments are more exciting (personally speaking.)

Good luck! Image

If you want to have a challange, there are two benchmarks located at Devil's Lake that we've located. One is just off the West Bluff Trail and is a triangulation station, so try to find all three discs....they are all there but two are much harder to locate. then for a hike and climb to remember...The benchmark on the south bluff!! No trails, no easy way to get to it, but do-able by us older cachers, and the view of Devil's Lake is tremendous. One that very few people ever get to. Many years ago there used to be a South Bluff Trail, but it is long gone now. Plan to take a lunch to eat on top, and allow plenty of time. Definately a 4 1/2 and worth it!!
