Some of you may have noticed the ads on geocaching.com for the new gps unit, the Geomate.jr, I'm wondering has any one tried one yet? I seen one at REI in Madison the other day & thought at this price they might just fly off the shelves.

The unit is designed to be kid friendly and comes pre-loaded with over 250,000 caches(caches are regulars only, have to be listed for 6months, and difficulty less than 3). With the update cable thats coming out soon this seems like an interesting unit. There is a long discussion on the GC forums about the unit already but I'm more interested in local usage. how is this thing in the dense woods?

Here are a few links with info about the unit:

Thanks for the heads up! Here is a direct link to the show for anyone interested.

After Reading more online about the unit I see it uses the same SirfIII Chipset as the 60CSx, so it might not be that bad under the trees.

Just a slight correction. The Geomate Jr. starts out containing only traditional caches (not necessarily regular). They also filter anything with difficulty or terrain over 3.5, and only include caches active for 4 months or more. They are apparently developing an "upgrade kit" (AKA data cable) and are going to provide other choices of filters for cache downloads, including everything in the US. Quite frankly, I think the problem is that everyone (or nearly everyone) recognizes this is a beginner/kids unit, and no one wants to pay big bucks for a toy.
