WSQ 1868: Fields of Flags and Poppies

Here it is, the weekend we’ve all been waiting for since the first snowflakes started to fall late last year. That glorious three-day weekend in late May that kicks off summer is fast approaching, and this year in Wisconsin it looks to be a beautiful one. Temperatures in the 70s should make the barbecues and family gatherings enjoyable throughout the state. And of course, don’t forget that a nice long weekend just begs for some caches to be found.

What we also must not forget is why we have this three-day weekend. Since the founding of our great nation, many a life has been lost preserving the freedoms we know. We have not always paused as a nation to remember those lives. I chose 1868 for my WSQ number in the title because it is one of several years that Memorial Day observances began. 1866 could be another year, but that was a Southern tradition that has faded, and 1868 was the year the North began observing Decoration Day on the last  Monday of May. Decoration Day began as a day to remember the soldiers who had fallen during the Civil War. Over time, these observances began to encompass the fallen from all US conflicts. Today, Memorial Day honors all veterans who have passed on. This is seen through the decoration of veterans’ graves all over the country with American flags. Seeing a field of flags in one of our national cemeteries is quite a sight.

This weekend, a lot of us will be out caching in the beautiful weather. If you find yourself passing by a WSQ, stop in and see just how many flags you can find in our small cemeteries that dot the countryside. If you do a little research before you go, you could even find yourself watching a local American Legion or VFW post having a memorial service in one of these cemeteries. A lot of these veterans organizations will visit cemeteries local to their post and read the names of the veterans buried there and give a 21 gun salute.

I hope everyone has a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend, whatever you find yourself doing. I would ask that at sometime while you are walking down the trail, or sitting down to brats and burgers fresh off the grill, or even enjoying the company of friends around the campfire, stop and remember why you have the freedom to do all of these wonderful things we enjoy. And by the way, when you’re picking up your caching fuel, or goodies for your barbecue, give a dollar to the seasoned veteran outside the grocery store for a poppy. I’ll let you guys look up the meaning of that, but the field of poppies was an interesting story to me.

Who’s Ready for Some New WGA SWAG???

Crazy new WGA  SWAG will be available for the  15 Year Anniversary (thanks to IcyPaws for the new logo). New stuff will be for sale at the Campout. Come check out what we’ve got.  We have even sought out merchandise from one of the WGA founders, The Searchers, who are also the owners of Wooden Nickel Geocoins. Wooden nickels with the awesome logo for this year’s anniversary will be for sale along with some sweatshirts, hoodies, zipper hoodies, t-shirts, and even  some Sport-Tek shirts (zeeman_clan personally endorses the Sport-Tek shirts) from our current supplier. Anyone looking to upgrading their WGA wardrobe needs to stop by the Associations tent and make sure they check out what’s new. Older styles are still available with a very nice discount, and hide containers are waiting to be snatched up for hiding courtesy of Candyman. We hope to see everyone down at the SWAG tent this weekend at the Campout.

Store Closing Soon

Just wanted to let you all know that the WGA Store will be closing Thursday so if you haven’t paid for your campsite yet, now is the time to do so. We will still accept payments on Friday and Saturday  if you prefer to pay via cash or check.

Besides paying for your site, you can pick up a few other goodies from the store as well. Need some SPS Pathtags, lanyards, or patches? We will prepick these items for you ahead of time and have them for you when you come to sign in at the shelter.

Here’s to a quick week and Friday will be here before we know it. See you all there!

You Ought to be in Pictures!

Some of you may have figured out the references to Outdoor Wisconsin in my last couple of posts and wondered what was happening. Well, here’s your chance to represent the Wisconsin Geocaching Association and the state of Wisconsin by attending https://coord.info/GC70X4V

Jeff Kelm of Outdoor Wisconsin and his film crew will be joining us  at the 2017 WGA Spring Not So Pleine Pancake Breakfast. Him and his crew are looking to us to teach them what geocaching in Wisconsin is all about, as a group, and to the entire geocaching community. It just so happens to be during our 15th Year Anniversary. How fitting is that?! It’s going to be a pretty awesome adventure in my opinion.

So, let’s show Wisconsin Public Television and all of those Outdoor Wisconsin viewers how we cache in Wisconsin. Let’s give them the best caches they can find. Let’s let them see how united we are as a group. Let’s put on our best smiles and welcome them to our playground and see what it takes to be a geocacher in the great state of Wisconsin.

Say Cheese!!

Let us fill your Saturday evening with night caches. Let us bring your family and friends together by the campfire. Let us be social and get to make some new friends and rekindle that relationship with the people we all know and love. I’m excited, are you?wga15

STATE QUADRANT UPDATE

Original Post:

Defining the state into quadrants for purpose of rotating WGA events has always been a “gray” area.  This was one of many concerns addressed at the recent 2017 BOD meeting. It was decided to divide the state into quadrants from the geographical center of the state, which is Pittsville, or N44 37.458 W89 59.646. Since the WGA Spring Campout & Fall Picnic have already been planned and the venues booked, it was decided that going forward, this division should be used to determine future events. Events will continue to be rotated as they have in the past. The map shows the new divisions.

Updated Post:

After the BOD posted the quadrant divisions that they came up with at the 2017 BOD meeting this still remained a “gray” area.  Questions were raised by the members and the BOD readdressed the issue.  It seems the information that was obtained from different web sites making our division wrong.  The actual geographical center of the state is actually Auburndale, or N44 37.458  W89 59.646  We have updated the map showing the quadrant divisions.  Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone.

Geocacher’s Guide to Hitchhikers of the Northwoods.

We all know that every geocaching adventure requires proper preparations. You need your GPSr, a pen, maybe a bike, maybe a friend, but above all, you need to know where you are going. Simple park and grabs don’t require much more than a GPSr full of caches, your favorite scribble stick, and enough gas to make sure you aren’t walking home. Those of us who like to adventure a little off the beaten path need a few more supplies to make the adventure possible. Sometimes you have to break out the chest waders, other times climbing sticks may be the TOTT for your adventure. Now that the weather is warming up, one of the most important things that us “off the beaten path” cachers need to keep in mind is the tick presence in the state of Wisconsin.

Unfortunately for us, Wisconsin has one of the highest rates of tick borne diseases in the United States. While that seems like a scary thought, keep in mind that we do have a great expanse of beautiful countryside that ticks love to live in, and a great number of people in our state that love to get outside.  Of course, a lot of people in places with high concentration of ticks is going to result in quite a few cases of diseases spread by ticks. Preparation is the key to not becoming one of these statistics.

Preventing tick attachment is the key to not contracting a tick borne illness. Most diseases spread by ticks are only caused by a tick that has been attached for 36 or more hours. Finding them before they attach can be easily accomplished by wearing light colored clothing to easily spot the little parasites, and tucking in clothing, especially pants cuffs. Long sleeves, long pants, and hats all keep these little buggers from finding our skin. If the tick doesn’t have access to the skin, it can’t attach. Staying out of places that ticks prefer to live is another way of avoiding them. Tall grasses and other vegetation is a perfect place to find ticks. Using well mowed trails and only venturing into overgrowth when absolutely necessary is a good way to keep them off.

Of course, chemical repellants discourage the pesky little arachnids completely. DEET is your friend when it comes to all around biting, buzzing, and blood sucking pests of the woods. I’ve heard that most experts recommend a minimum of 30% DEET when combating ticks, and it does a pretty good job on the mosquitos as well. I am personally a fan of the 50% variety, but that’s only because the smell bothers me less than the itching or creepy crawly feeling that comes with the lesser concentrations. DEET can be applied to the skin, but does come with a little shorter working time than it’s partner repellant. Permethrin is a very effective at  repelling ticks and biting insects. It does come with a challenge that it should only be used on clothing and gear. In addition, any gear treated with permethrin should be kept away from pets as it can be toxic to animals.

If a tick should become attached, it’s a very simple remedy. Tweezers are the easiest removal tool to come by, but making sure to remove as much of the tick as possible can be challenging. Specialty tools made for removing ticks may be a staple in every Wisconsin geocacher’s bag. They are easy to use and make quick work of the little bugger that thinks they are going to get a free meal off of you. Even if all of the tick doesn’t come out, don’t worry. Most people’s skin is tough enough to push out the remaining bits without a problem. If you suspect that a tick has been attached for more than 36 hours, or if a rash develops around where a tick had attached, it is advised to see a medical professional.

Wisconsin offers a variety of places to hunt for Geocaches, and a lot of these areas come with challenges. With the proper planning and preparation, ticks don’t have to pose much of a challenge to us. Just being ready with the proper clothing, repellants, and knowledge will give us the advantage to enjoy the outdoors we love without the worries of Northwoods Hitchhikers.

With a Month to Go, It’s Anybody’s Race!!! (That guy in 20th has got some work to do though.)
