Events are Back!

With the cancellation of so many events due to the Corona virus pandemic, we’ve kind of let our event notifications slip. Now that the state is beginning to open back up, we have some upcoming events to report. The next event in Wisconsin, the Rock Island Getaway Sweet 16, is scheduled for this weekend. Unfortunately, Rock Island is still closed, but the organizers are working on plans to at least have a meet and greet on Washington Island. Check the event page for updates.

Next Saturday is the 11th annual Meet Me at the Lake event. Bring a dish to pass and enjoy Roger’s famous “Trash Can Turkey.”

Check out the list of events at https://www.wi-geocaching.com/events/ for details.

Board of Directors Meeting Minutes June 2020

So how about 2020, huh? As we near the halfway point in the year, I feel confident saying this is not what anyone expected. In our tiny little universe of Wisconsin geocaching, we press on! With new caches being published again, I hope you have great new caches to find (if you haven’t already)!

With a successful Geocaching 101 virtual event in the books, we discussed the possibility for some additional “Meet the Board” video events over the next several weeks. We also approved a change to the Lonely Cache Game and talked about holding an in-person mid-summer event. Stay safe out there!

We Miss You!

With the recent “Safer at Home” order and precautions associated with the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve had to cancel three of our planned events this year. We miss seeing our geocaching friends. We know that a lot of you are feeling the same way, too. So we’ve planned a new event for July 18, 2020; “The Mid-summer Meet and Greet” (GC8TP3J ). This event will be held at Derge County Park in Dodge County. We have reserved the Quonset Building from 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM.

In response to the pandemic, and in the interest of your health, we will not be holding a pot-luck meal. You are welcome to bring a lunch for yourself, but we discourage sharing of food and/or utensils between non-family members. We will provide charcoal and a grill, but we will not be providing grilling utensils. If you plan to grill, please bring your own spatula, tongs, etc.

The Dodge County Parks Department has set an occupancy limit of 50 people in the shelter building, and we encourage attendees to maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet.

The park will be open for camping, however only those with reservations will be permitted to camp. While the restrooms will be open, the shower building is closed. Please check the Dodge County Parks website for more information.

Lonely Cache Game Continues to Evolve

When the WGA first rolled out the Lonely Cache Game in 2008, Wisconsin had only a few thousand caches and the majority of the caches on the Lonely Cache list had been unfound for less than a year. Since then the number of caches in Wisconsin has grown to almost 29,000 and our list of 500 lonely caches have almost all gone unfound for over 4 years.

In an effort to encourage more cachers to participate in the Lonely Cache Game, the board of directors and LCG committee have decided to increase the number of caches on the list from 500 to 1000. This change will take effect with the July/August 2020 list. We hope that this change will make the Lonely Cache Game more accessible to cachers throughout the state.
