Today, October 9th, Ken Braband gave a talk on geocaching to the Wisconsin Parks and Recreation Association regional group which included many park managers and directors from mostly southern Wisconsin. His talk addressed many of the concerns and misconceptions that they might have toward geocaching in their parks and towns. It seemed to be a rousing success. I assisted Ken with part of the program and had placed two demonstration caches – WPRA #1 and WPRA #2 near the meeting site. After Kens talk we split up the group and they then found the caches using their own GPS’s and ours.
All of the managers that I talked with seemed to feel very positive about geocaching and its benefits to their communities.
Some comments they made that I will share:The Madison Parks Director encouraged caches that feature environmental locations such as the oldest Oak tree in Madison, birthplace of certain environmentalists etc. These are just examples but he seemed very positive about having caches in Madison parks as long as the natural areas etc. are avoided.
Others wanted to know how to get educational programs on geocaching and use of GPS’s in their communities. Ken pointed out to them that the geocaching group is always there to help.
The biggest thing they wanted to know how to do was use GPS’s and what type would be best.
Overall I thought it was a great success and the right people for our group to be talking to about geocaching.
Many thanks to Ken for traveling quite a ways to share his time and geocaching with this group.I bet some new members to our organization will come from this talk.

Great Job Ken, Wzbt03, WGA and everyone else involved.
Hopefully this will keep the doors open. I already know that WGA has set an example and precedent nationwide. MnGCA and MN geocachers are envious of the relationship WI cachers have with the State. Hopefully the MnGCA will be able to work eventually as positively with the State of MN. It’s not for lack of trying, that’s for sure!
I’m sure with all of the good press and meetings like this will help out MN and other states that have ‘banned’ geocaching.

10/09/2003 at 7:44 pm #1735863You guys should be proud of the work you are doing! Hopefully, once Wisconsin has a geocaching policy put into place that is favorable to all, other states will be able to look to your efforts as a positive example as they develop policy with their respective bodies.
Thanks again for your hard work!
10/11/2003 at 12:41 pm #1735864Special thanks go to wzbt03 for setting up this meeting. Jeff has been instrumental in working not only with the WPRA but also the Janesville Parks Dept. to let them know about geocaching. Janesville is now a geocaching-friendly area, thanks to Jeff’s efforts. This goes to show that local geocachers don’t need to sit back and wait for the WGA board to take action in their communities. We can work closely with you to support YOUR efforts with local parks and other municipal and county officials to make them aware of the benefits of geocaching.
Here’s a photo of Jeff speaking to the WPRA group.

Jeff has been doing some great work promoting geocaching with his local officials. Ken’s background with the DNR made them a great team.
Thanks for taking the time to help us all out!
