Some person or organization has started up a self-guided tour using a rental GPS Receiver … their first tour location is Port Washington. Flyers are popping up in local shops. Sounds like an interesting and natural use for a GPSr. If you want to check out the website it’s: http://www.routeandabout.com

This sounds like an answer to my topic on how to promote geocaching locally at http://www.wi-geocaching.com/forums/Forum8/HTML/000904.html

I’ve emailed the people running this thing (sort of a side business they just started) … they are local geocachers in my area. However, they indicate this is NOT geocaching .. however, they DO recommend geocaching (including the website) on the back of the tour guide that customers get.

We chatted back and forth on a few emails. The assure me that they will never have a “tour” take someone to a geocache container … as we are both concerned what problems someone not understanding geocaching could cause if guided to a container (ie. moving the container to a new spot for the next finder, or taking a Travel Bug, for example).

If they don’t have plans for it already:

Next Phase – Connection to PDA (like PPC via cable or integrated) so that media (movies, pictures, sounds) can be presented based upon GPSr detected location.

Next Phase – Cell Phone/WAP/GPSr integration so same media can be sucked out of the air, can be dynamic so special activities/deals/commercials etc. can also be presented.

Next Phase – Feedback on tour (ie stayed longer here, bought lunch there) AKA big brother
