I was doing my morning routine when I heard the word GEOCACHING from a strange place, the radio! I recorded it on my PDA and lowered the quality to reduce storage space and download time. I still had to split it into 3 segments. Total time about 7 minutes. Click on each link to play.

You are listening to Dan Diver(Sp?) and Jerry Bott. Bott, who turns into a jerk towards the end has the biggest unjustified ego in Wisconsin but Dan sounds like one of us.

    Segment 1
    Segment 2
    Segment 3

Congrats to Cary? of West Bend and Joe of Hartford who called in and represented us well.

Maybe we should each start e-mailing them directly to explain our passion? If they got a mailbox full they might think twice.

I can’t help but wonder how well he reads? 3000 caches in Waukesha?

Wow! Nice job Jeff! Perhaps someone needs to invite Dan on an adventure…he seems interested. I think they could both use a copy of the news report Rhonda and John did, perhaps it would shed some light on the fun of caching. I agree w/ Russ about the emails…I’m in…when do we start and to what address Russ?

As for the Waukesha thing…I did a basic search of WI, then Waukesha City and it shows 3332 hides. There were 167 pages. I didn’t look at them to see how far out they went, but I could see how one would think they were all right in Waukesha.

Hey Jeff, where is the station located? Maybe we should see what’s hidden around them. If there’s nothing there we should put one out and have them find it.

It has been my impression that this type of ‘talk radio’ thrives on misinformation. It is fed by listener feedback, especially negative feedback. The more negative feedback an announcer gets, the more effective he/she is.
So, if negative emails are sent, each one counts as a listener.

I don’t think anyone posting so far wants to mail the negative…I think we all want to explain geocaching properly. That way they can make an informed opinion.

Dan sounds like he wants to know more so…

When I heard geocaching, I whipped out the cell phone and was waiting for the number. Never got it. Though, the two that did get to talk did nicely enough. Dan’s a pretty nice guy, being a pilot and all that too. Jerry is good but prone to rash impressions.

But think about it from someone not into geocaching. It is easy to see how it could look like some role playing game. In the beginnings of it, it was a mix of nature hikes and history lessons. Now that many of the trails have been hiked and many history lessons learned, there is more of an easter egg hunt aspect to it. As with many pastimes, If I have to explain it, you won’t understand it.

    Nice audio capture, Jeff!
But once again it confirms my opinion: never, NEVER listen to talk radio.

My wife, Geocaching Widow, works for Clear Channel, who owns WISN. She knows Jerry Bott, but not Dan Diver.

We are going to be contacting them to see if they are interested in learning more about geocaching.

Thanks Jeff for attaching the audio.

There is a permanent cache not too far from the station. But I would be more than happy to place one nearby for them to find. Of course I would fill it with lots of valuable items.

I will update you all with what we find out.

I just stopped by Clear Channel this afternoon to pick up a donation for an event I’m running this fall from a nice gal in promotions (not Geocaching Widow…but she’s a nice gal too).

Anyhow, there are several good places on their property to hide a temporary cache if the station wants a demonstration to see what it’s all about. There would be a good rock hide along their driveway, plus plenty of places to hide micros in the trees out in front. If they want a 5/5 cache, maybe they’ll let us put one on top of one of their radio towers in back…LOL!

Maybe WISN can turn geocaching as a positive thing by running a promotional contest, kind of like that Talk Star thing they’ve been doing. They can hide a cache somewhere in town with a big prize for the first finder, similar to the Magellan contest. Didn’t another radio station in town hide a bunch of money in a park & ride lot, and they gave clues until someone found it?

If WISN wants help from geocachers, I’d be glad to assist.
