    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What will the coins look like?
See the images for the coin in the WGA Store.

Some of the images of the geocoins in the store have freaky colors. Will the real geocoins be painted or colored or look this ugly?
NO! The colors are there only to give information about the levels (depths) of things present in the coin design. The real geocoins will only be gold in color, except for the tracking number which will be laser engraved and filled with black.

When will I get my coins?
Best guess right now is mid to late November, but it is somewhat out of our control. (You should have them for Christmas though… they make great gifts. ) First, we need to obtain a block of tracking numbers from geocaching.com. Then we have to place an order with the coin company, giving them the tracking numbers we got from geocaching.com. Finally, we need to package and ship the coins.

How many coins will be minted?
We will mint as many coins as are ordered and maybe a few extra… we will not cut off sales early if we sell a certain number of coins. We expect to sell 500 to 1000 coins.

Are the coins being sold for cost?
The coins are priced so that the WGA will “break even” if approximately 500 coins are sold. A small profit will be made if more than 500 coins are sold, and this will be retained by the WGA to be used for future events and other organizational needs. The shipping costs are the actual costs to ship the coins via the USPS, so we aren’t ripping you off there either.

Can I pick up my coins to save shipping costs?
No, we decided not to hassle with scheduling and staffing events to hand out the coins, mainly because the shipping costs are so reasonable.

I live in Germany/Brazil/Australia/[fill in the blank with any country other than the U.S.]. Can I order Wisconsin geocoins too?
No unfortunately not. We decided to not allow international orders to avoid having to deal with different shipping rates and customs issues. Hopefully you have friends in the U.S. who can buy some coins for you.

I can’t seem to figure out how to order more than one coin. Is this possible?
Yes. Add the coin to your cart, and then view your cart (“Cart Contents” link in the upper right hand order). Change the number in the quantity (Qty.) box, then hit the Update button. Your cart should now reflect the new quantity and you are ready to check out your multiple coin purchase.

I don’t remember my WGA member password. How can I buy coins?
Send a note to jeremy [at] wi-geocaching.com with from the email account you have registered with the WGA. Include your WGA member nickname if known. Jeremy will send you your current password or reset it and send you a new one.

Still have a question about the geocoins? Post it here and we’ll get it answered and add it to our FAQ.

We’ve had several people ask the question “Why can’t I order more than one geocoin?”

Answer: After updating the number in the “Qty” box, you must press the “Update” button prior to proceeding to the checkout.

I wasn’t joking… literally, what is the purpose of a geocoin? They look great. Is it simply a keepsake? Do they double as some type of bug?

I’m sure I’m not the only in these forums that is interested in purchasing one but wants to know what they are?

A Geocoin like this is trackable through geocaching.com just like a regular travel bug.

    #1738417

So it is something you release then?

You can release them, give them goals, and use them just like travel bugs. Each coin will have genuine geocaching.com tracking number and will track EXACTLY like a travel bug.

Or, you can collect them, give them out for Christmas presents etc…

Thanks BTT – That’s helpful. I really like the idea of giving them away as presents. That would be a great way to get young nieces and nephews into the hobby.

I will be doing several things with mine. One will be sent out into the world just like any other trackable geocoin, one will go into my collection, I may give a few as gifts, then a few will go on my trading list. Geocoin collecting and trading has become quite the sub-hobby these days.

My question: will we get our own unique icon on GC.com?

I asked similar questions here ( http://www.wi-geocaching.com/forums/Forum7/HTML/000042.html ) on June 27. I’m still not sure I understand the fascination with coins. I’d rather be geocaching. However, we (WGA) are trying to cater to a request expressed by some of our members. Hence the geocoins.

They can also be used as goodwill tokens when visiting cachers in another state or country. Drop in at one of their events, give the host a WI Geocoin.
