Planning forum for the 2006 Rock Island Getaway. Discussion on dates, activities, beer, etc.
12/29/2005 at 3:24 am #1739048First thing, we need to pick a weekend.
Secondly, we need to decide if we should reserve one of the two group sites, or have DIY campsites, like last year.
Last year, it was on Father’s Day Weekend, which worked out for me, as it was late enough for school to be out, and early enough to avoid the peak season crowds, which was needed since we all had different camp sites.
If we move the campout into July or August, we will almost certainly need to use a group site to ensure accommodations for all, as the campground is pretty much at full capacity during that period.
Thoughts?
12/29/2005 at 3:41 am #1739049I liked that it was in June. I wouldn’t want it moved to another month.

12/29/2005 at 3:53 am #1739050Possible June weekends:
June 16, 17, & 18 (Father’s Day Weekend)
June 23, 24, 25 (weekend before Fourth of July)
Anything earlier runs into school still being session…
12/29/2005 at 4:06 am #1739051I’d love to attend again, but will be at a Symposium in Superior over Father’s Day weekend. If it were on the following weekend, you could count me in!

12/29/2005 at 5:08 am #1739052Fathers Day weekend works best for us and is really the only one that is available. We had a great time last year and don’t want to miss it so we really hope this date works out.
It would be nice if we could get one of the group camp sites for several reasons. 1) The group sites are closer to the docks.[ ] 2)It would feel more like an event if everyone was together.
The title says it all: Rock Island “GETAWAY”. What we really liked most about last year was that it was one of those very few events that you did not have to feel pressured into getting a bunch of caches. It was nice to relax and enjoy the surroundings and not to be on a quest to find a bunch of hides.
A great time and we highly recommend it!
12/29/2005 at 8:54 pm #1739053We hope to make it this year. We would reserve own own site. Any weekend works for us.
12/29/2005 at 9:29 pm #1739054For those people that may be reading these posts who did not attend the previous Rock Island Getaway, which has now been archived and will no longer be listed by general searches, the first getaway used waypoint GCMX84. A search for that waypoint will bring up the first event’s cache page.
Regarding the date: I had commented in the cache logs that perhaps attendance might be better if the event didn’t coincide with Father’s Day. But I agree with the points made in this forum regarding avoiding school season and the heavy tourist months. June is about the best time to camp on the island. If we push it back a week we will be up against Fourth of July weekend. There may be a conflict for some folks that can’t afford the time to take two consecutive weekends off camping.
That said, regardless of the weekend selected, there will be some people that have a conflict. We will try to attend no matter when it is held.
12/29/2005 at 11:38 pm #1739055After a bit of math (I’m not so good at it) trying to figure out our weekend work rotation, it does appear that I would be working Father’s Day weekend. Any other weekend in June would work (thank goodness — I don’t have any school worries anymore!)
But, if I can’t come, that would leave more beer for the rest of the group….

12/30/2005 at 4:22 am #1739059Group II holds up to 40 people. It costs $80 per night, plus a $10 reservation fee, for a total of $170, which we would divide by the number of parties sharing the site.
If people wish to reserve their own individual site, the cost would be $12 per night, $10 reservation fee, for a total of $34.
To break even on the group site, five parties would need to share the cost to make it the same price as an individual site. ($170 divided by 5 = $34 each)
I really loved the waterside campsite, but TS will tell you it can backfire if it’s a windy weekend.

Being thrifty, as long as the cost is the same or better, I’m all for the group site. My site last year was spectacular (near potties, and except for some wonderful neighbors across the field, very secluded. But apparently it was pretty much the furthest away (except for the remote sites). Not a problem, except when it came to hauling all that wood (again, thanks to my helpers!). The group sites are much closer to water and wood!
