Keep your eyes and ears peeled. The Chippewa Valley Convention and Tourism Bureau has recently taken a liking to Geocaching and has decided to host an event that will run roughly from May 1 to June 15. The event will feature over 30 unique caches hidden just for this event (are not going to be listed on gc.com until AFTER the event) featuring unique and distinct places in the Chippewa Valley; Menomonie, Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls. This event is being advertised in Minnesota as well. The idea is to draw cachers and new cachers to the area to see all the Chippewa Valley has to offer. You do not have to buy anything.

Each cache, while having typical swag and logs, will also have a unique paper punch. Cachers playing will need to review and consent to a disclaimer and then download a passbook from the Chippewa Valley CTB that has all the coords and other information in them. Once you find a cache and sign the log, you punch your passbook. After you find them all, or all you want to find, you mail in your passbook.

What is the draw? Each cache you find equals one entry into drawings. You get bonus entry for finding them all (COMPLETE DETAILS WILL BE ON WEBPAGE for CTB). Prizes to be won tentatively include several new GPSrs, camping equipment, mountain bike, packages from local businesses, etc. Again, details will be listed.

ALSO, the first something like 500 entries will receive a geocoin commissioned and struck for this event! Again, complete details to follow.

Finally, the caches have been hidden by local cachers. After the event is over, the caches will be submitted for approval to GC.com for approval and you will be able to get smilies as well!

Stay tuned for information on when link to CVB is open, complete details, etc.

    Ooooooooo!

We are coming up to EC about June 11th which will give us time to some (maybe all?) of them. Very cool!

Well, maybe not *all* caches will become permanent caches, so you won’t necessarily get a smiley for *every* one you find. I know one of mine is too close to an existing cache (although on the other side of a body of water). The contest should still be worth the find, anyway.

I visited the travel center today. They have a cache located on the property. It is nice to see a city so informed and in touch with activities.

Sometimes those will get approved if you have to travel further than .1 miles to get to it.

Several of us are in the final stages of planning our weekend field trip to the area. (One day just isn’t enough for this part of the state). This area has some great hikes, and awesome scenery. This is gonna be great!

Kent, no mention was made of having access to a waypoint file for these caches. It would be nice to have, especially for those from out of the area, who might want to plot them on a map before heading over.

Also, the obvious, downloading to our GPSrs.

No waypoint information will be available until the contest’s official start date – which I believe is May 1, but I could be wrong. At that point, all info on the contest will be available from the Chippewa Valley Convention and Visitor website: http://www.chippewavalley.net

The caches may not all be in place, even, until the official start. I know mine aren’t.

As to the availability of a waypoint file from the website, I don’t know if they will be doing this.

At this point, not sure how to accomodate those who are going “paperless”. The thinking is that anyone planning on entering the drawings will not be able to go paperless because the passbooks that you punch will serve as your entry slips. Oh, and the grandprize GPSr is rather, um, “colorful”… 🙂

I suppose that I can make the waypoint files I have from Mapsource available if people email me directly but that doesn’t help those who are using something besides Garmin. The thinking behind this event is that it is a fledgling attempt to see if it pays to do it yearly. If so, then they will/can invest in the software to make this more stremlined.

Other idea. Anyone out there planning on participating that uses spomething other than Garmin who is willing to make the waypoint files, email em to me and I can distribute according to what people need?

          Just a thought.

Of course I could wait to respond until my coffee has kicked in. GSAK. I’ll see what I can do.

Does this mean we cannot keep our booklets if we intend to enter the contest? I like to collect such things from events.

          #1739263

I would say copy it or print a second and punch both. No other entry method came to mind where cache find could be verified. Remember, this is the fledgling attempt. I am anxious for feedback after to see what to change for next year.

Boy is it going to be busy the next few weeks! Kewaskum event, company banquet, campout, Jefferson event, teaching a few people the basics of caching, have to finish the “?” cache and now we just have to make a run to the valley somewhere in there too! Self imposed torture…. you gotta love it!
