    Hi,
After spending days on the web looking into geo caching I think I’m ready to purchase my first GPS. The eTrex Legend looks just fine for my purpose. I’m wondering if the base map included with the Legend is sufficient for geo caching or do I need a supplemental map, ie MapSources Topo?

Any replies would be greatly appreciated!

We’ve had a legend now for the last 6 months or so, and have had not a single problem with doing anything related to geocaching…All you need is the legend itself..

    I think Amazon.com has the best price on them now…$189.00 – $50.00 rebate = $139.00

    Hope this helps!!

Many people have no maps built in and do just fine. I have a Garmin III with a cheesy map built in, but have never used that function. I have used Delorme maps on my computer though.

Ditto to what Miata said. I’ve two GPS’s with road maps in them and they are good for getting to the parking area. I’d like to get a topographical map loaded in the GPS when I leave the car though. Since I’ve got two, I should have done that by now. The darned food budget keeps robbing my fun budget.

    Snail,

If you’re interested in a Legend, we have one that’s only about 8 months old or so. It’s in Mint condition. We have both data cables the standard one, and the one with 12v power plug… If we were to put it up for sale… What would you offer? If it’s enough, I get to buy a new unit!

Maybe we can work a deal!

Hi! To answer you question about the base maps: The truth of the matter is that you don’t need ANY maps built in to go goecaching. I started with a yellow Garmin eTrex, which had no road-map capabilities at all, and it worked quite well for me. As someone else mentioned, the map feature can be handy in getting you to the parking area (which is one reason I upgraded last summer), but you certainly don’t NEED it.

Bottom line: The base map may or may not be helpful to you, but it will not hurt to have it on there. Just make sure you can load more detailed maps into the unit in case you find yourself wanting them months down the line.

An update is in order. Thanks for all the replies!! Snoshu, thanks for the offer, I probably woulda taken you up on it had I read your post before I ordered from Amazon.

I ended up buying the Legend without any additional maps. After playing around with it for a couple of days, I ordered MetroGuide by MapSource. The base maps didn’t show the level of detail that I expected and I liked the idea of setting routes and waypoints from the computer instead of the GPS.

We found our first cache, Scuppernong Springs, (thanks sbukosky) without MetroGuide and while I realize I don’t need the supplemental maps for geocaching, I think I’ll enjoy the bells and whistles that come with it.

As of today’s date, I am pretty sure that a vaccine for the geocaching bug has been developed yet. Congratulations on your first cache, and hope to see you at one of our picnics/campouts/gatherings.
