I seem to be spending more and more time preparing for a day of geocaching and was hoping to find out how others prepare for a trip. I print out each cache (without logs) including a detailed mapquest map. I then enter all the coordinates manually into the Mapsend software to get a general idea of what caches I have not found. I also use this to load the coordinates into the gpsr. I then convert all the coordinates using a calculator and enter them into the Streets and Trips 2001 software. Using Streets and Trips, I can route out the trip I plan to take and print out the directions.
Is there an easier way? How does everyone else prepare?

That is as long as S&T 2001 works with importing data like S&T 2003…

Team FlushingrouseGee! Sounds like a lot of preparation – but that is part of the fun, err game! I download a pocket querry from geocaching dot com covering the radius of my search. Then use spinner to create a custom gpx file. Then use plucker to install into my pda and expert gps to install the custom search area into my garmin V. Usually takes about five minutes.
I have two basic steps. I have the custom searches made by geocaching.com which hotsync right to my PDA. That’s all for the cache pages. In the same mailing, I also get the EasyGPS waypoints for the same caches and those load into my GPS. Now I’m ready to go!
If I want to get further detail, I’ll then load those waypoints into Mapsource so I can see the general lay of them. If I really want to get prepared, I’ll then load the waypoints into USAphotomaps. Now I can see the actual land where the waypoints are! I’ll sometimes select the place I want to park and enter that into the GPS so I can have the Garmin V take me directly there rather than spend time deciding where to park. I can also see creeks and other obstructions. I have actually used it to make a route that I load into the GPS and follow that right up to the cache!
They say the journey is often better than the destination. I agree. I consider the homework to be part of the journey. There are lots of flowers to smell on the way to the cache!

WaukeshaWe must be doing something wrong… we are missing a lot of details. We do a zip code search of an area we want to visit, then print the cache sheets [printer friendly version] and down-load the WP data to the GPS. Then I start the car and honk for Trudy to hurry-up.
Our team is still in the middle ages when we go. All we do is either print the pages or just write a few notes on a piece of paper, then manually enter the coordinates in the gpsr and off we go. Getting there is half the fun, and some of the things we’ve seen doing it this way have been very unique. The pay off is the time I get to spend with Vincetti and the sights we see along the way. It may take us longer to find or get to the caches, but we still enjoy it very much!
