My buddy, Huggger, wants to get her first GPSr. But she’s the queen of “best deals”. Are there any low end units (maybe near the $100 zone) that work good enough for geocaching? She’s look at the Garmin Geko 101 and 201. But looking at the website, they seem to be lacking … I don’t see a left/right/up/down toggle button and who knows what else is missing for $100. All comments would be great. I’ll force Huggger to watch this forum … have at it gang.
I’ve heard lots of good things about the ‘little yellow’ Garmin Etrex. It’s in the price range you listed and there are many, many cachers that have reached 100, 200, 300+ finds with this GPSr. You can get them nearly anywhere (sporting goods stores, sporting goods sections of other stores, etc.) or maybe try the Garmin website.
They appear to lack some buttons, but the functionality is there. If she goes that route, there are many that I’m sure would be more than willing to give GPSr lessons.
Look in the “For Sale” folder of this board – looks like someone has a Magellan for sale for $100.
I dearly loved my Garmin Geko 101. As a starter unit, it was all I needed. It is very easy to use, and I didn’t at all mind the lack of “bells & whistles.” I still miss it…
It was probably more akin to finding a geocache with a compass than with a GPS.
My brother has a birthday coming up and I tried to get him a Geko 101 or 201 through eBay, but I didn’t want to spend a lot (who knows if he would enjoy geocaching enough for me to spend more) but I couldn’t get a price under $100 (I love my brother, but I’m thrifty!) I did end up getting a yellow eTrex for about $80. I think he’ll like it.

The etrex I got off of eBay for my brother arrived yesterday — it’s a neat, basic unit! It might be tougher to part with it than I had thought. Including shipping and insurance, I paid $84 — seemed to be pretty good deal.
