I’m a little baffeled right now. I was about to reply to a geocaching user that was wondering about some hints for our multi cache in northern WI (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=07d94bb2-0b4d-4212-a99b-b6a1ccdfd747). They were wondering the condition etc, so I was going to say that a cacher found it in May and some friends checked on it a couple months ago.

Anyways, I went to our cache page and the log for the user that found it was gone. So I’m like, am I imagining this? I check my email archive and I have the “Owner” email of the user finding it. Inside it has a link to the Log page which works. Above the date it has Archive in red. What in the world? You can archive logs? I checked the users (javaelina) stats and no information was in their stats about our cache.

    Has anyone experienced this?

To top off the wierdness, the geocachers that asked about a hint were ‘fools4cache’. If you look at what the user who found the cache on May 15th left, it is a ‘fools4cache card’.

I almost thought I was going crazy in circles trying to track this down…

Puzzel of the day I guess.

I *think* that if your log has an event associated with it, like a “find,” and you delete the log, it gets archived instead of deleted. It may also be that no logs are actually deleted, but it’s been a while since I’ve deleted one.

The owner could delete the log for personal reasons. We usually delete cache logs when visiting a cache where we drop and pick up the same travel bug in order to track its journey. The log would just add clutter to the cache page, especially if there are 3 bugs traveling with us. The Jeep TB will be logged in an IL cache to mark the path we took to MI, but the cache log will be deleted.

Why might they have deleted the log? Maybe they didn’t really find the cache and just made a good attempt at it and felt they should log it anyway? Maybe etc… Who knows, but apparently they did.

I agree with our naked tailed friend.
A deleted log entry can leave a “trail”, since it’s not really gone, just tucked away.
An example … I recently had a newbie (2 finds) log a find at my Port Puzzle, but in their entry they gave away the final location in their description of the “challenges” experienced. They had posted a picture with the entry. I was forced to delete their log entry. But if you go to that geocachers profile, the picture is still there, but the entry seems to be in never-never land.

Also … if you get an email of a log entry (either for your own caches or one you watch listing) … the email is the instant in time when they made the entry … if they later delete the entry or edit it, you will never know, unless you visit the cache page … this very fact makes it very challenging to keep track of how many people are coming to an event (since they can change their attendance count without being informed).
