As we are planning our late October trip to the Grand Canyon, I was wondering if anyone has any DeLorme Atlas and Gazateers that they would like to sell or loan out for 2-3 weeks. Specifically looking for New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and/or Colorado. Thanks.

I have AZ, NM and CO. Also NE.

How much time do you plan on being out West?

The reason I ask it that most people plan way too much, and spend all their time travelling between locations. You should figure 6-8 hours of travel time between places, since everthing is so spread out, and there are not a lot of roads to choose from.

The South Rim (of the Grand Canyon) has a lot of virtuals within easy access (i.e., along the tourist route, the West rim Drive, etc). Other virtuals require hiking into the canyon, some several days in length.

Since you will be close, south to Flagstaff and Sedona are recommended. Great places to visit, lots to see, great restaurants, etc. And lots of caches!

Day time temperatures can get into the 80/90 range yet, but overnight they will drop into the 40’s.

Need a local (Flagstaff / Grand Canyon) connection for hiking and or caching? I can provide some contacts.

    Enjoy your vacation!

    Hotdogs_off_trail,

Sedona was suggested as a visit. Do a little bit of research on “Fairfield Sedona” and let me know if you want to stay there. I have an RCI exchange or two about to expire that might be able to get a week there very cheap (no timeshare presentation required

    Hotdogs_off_trail,

Here is some additional informaiton about Sedona from the RCI reservation exchange site. Currently available units are the 1 bedroom (max 3, privacy 2) units with checkin on 10/22. Obviously if you’re interested, you wouldn’t need to use the entire timeshare week. The cost to you would be lower than staying in a hotel – possibly unless you only stayed one night. If you want to discuss further, you can contact me at “steve at karoleks dot com” or “skarolek at wi dot rr dot com”.

Thanks all! From the responses I’ve gotten and those I’m going to respond to, I’ll be covered. We will be hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and tent camping there. The rest of the time we’ll be van camping with our dogs. We’re looking forward to it. THANKS!!

If you have a laptop – I highly recommend the DELORME mapping software. It hooks right up to your GPS and you will always know where you are. On our trek west this summer we used that and didn’t take a single paper map with us.
