I’ll be in downtown Milwaukee July 9-12 with my family (kids ages 8 and 13). We are taking the train so we will not have the use of a car. Are there any geocaches that are “must do”s? I see Covert Cache, Don’t Look at Your Hands, and Bonito Vista Al Mar fairly close to our location (Wyndham Milwaukee Center, 139 E. Kilbourn). Are there any others that would be worth a cab or bus ride to get to? Is Inner City Surprise safe enough for a family? It sounds really interesting.
I’ve never been to Milwaukee, except in the train station while passing through on the way to Chicago, so I am completely unfamiliar with the city.
Apart from geocaches, are there any other suggestions for a family tourist in downtown? What would be your “must see” locations? Any good brewpubs, or something of the like, where Mom and Dad can enjoy a beer and the kids can eat high-fat tasty food?
Thanks for any info or advice.

06/29/2004 at 8:54 pm #1741580I highly recommend covert cache. The place is quite interesting and the food is good. I hope you know the password to get in.
06/29/2004 at 8:55 pm #1741581Hahaha- just from reading that hint I know where it is and I’ve never done it. That would be fun Lots of good stuff to see and do in that part of town anyway.

06/29/2004 at 11:17 pm #1741582Inner City surprise depends on the time of the day you go there. If it’s in the mid morning to early afternoon, and the owner or his housemate are there, you’re good to go (make friends with the dog first).

http://www.onmilwaukee.com/06/30/2004 at 3:02 am #1741584Bastille Days has always been one of our favorite festivals because it’s close to downtown and not at the lakefront where all the other summer festivals are. Also because there’s no admission charge! Great food and music. http://bastille.easttown.com/default.htm
Regarding the location of Covert Cache, I suppose if you’ve never been there before it’s an OK place to experience. The food is overpriced and the place is not known as a locals hangout. My 2 cents.[This message has been edited by kbraband (edited 06-29-2004).]

I had some type of garlic steak, I remember, and the prices were extremely reasonable… (my parents paid). I’d certainly recommend going if you haven’t been there.

07/08/2004 at 8:39 pm #1741586Thanks for all the info and advice. I have lots of general tourist info for Milwaukee but it is nice to get direct recommendations to narrow the list of possible activities.
Thanks again!
Ruth – in Milwaukee by this time tomorrow, unless Amtrak decides otherwise
07/08/2004 at 8:51 pm #1741587When in town, if you have questions, problems, etc.. Who ya gonna call? My cell bill is paid 414-737-6150. We may not be able to get out, due to a half-dozen irons in the fire. But, maybe we can help.
tb07/09/2004 at 5:01 am #1741588Thanks, Trudy and the Beast. Geocaching isn’t the main focus of our trip, but like any trip I’ve taken since March of 2002, geocaching is a possible activity. We’re coming to Milwaukee to be tourists so we’re interested in anything the city has to offer. If any geocachers find themselves downtown and are interested in seeking out other persons that like to talk about wandering around looking for small containers feel free to leave a message at the Wyndham Milwaukee Center under the name of Ruth Holliday or leave a message on my cellphone 715-828-5519. My family and I will be there from Friday afternoon until Monday afternoon.
