08/27/2002 at 3:51 am #1720889We’d like to first extend a greeting to our fellow Wisconsin Geocachers! We’re fairly new to the sport, starting this past June and have been addicted. We’ve found a few, but have yet to place some. We have an idea that we’d like to get some opinions on without ‘spoiling’ the cache’s full description. Alright, now for the idea. There is a location in Wi that has some historical significance for the area and we’d like to place a cache at that location. It is a commercial site, but there is no fee, or requirement to purchase anything (we don’t care if anyone would, we just like the history of what this place represents), now the question is, if this location requires you to be 21 normally to be served is it a bad idea? We’re not sure how many people under 21 geocache w/o someone that is older, but we wouldn’t doubt that there are. We’re pretty sure that one can enter the site if they are not 21, but we’re not completely sure. Do any of you see issues with this? This may not be completely coherent, but we don’t want to spoil the cache if we do place it. We’re thinking that this might be one of a series for the area for historical locations, but this one would not be a virtual most of the others probably would. And, as this is private property we have gotten permission to place this, they actually like the idea. This cache would be similar to the Cafe’ Cache’ in Madison http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=14425 Any comments/suggestions are welcome. Also, if it would be helpful we can post more information on it either here or through e-mail. We’re kind of looking for a ‘ok’ to place this cache from some experienced cachers Thanks,
 Katrina and Nick

We don’t know this for a fact, but have a strong belief that establishments that require you to be 21 to be served also have strong restrictions on under 21 being in the establishment. Some businesses of this nature liscense only a portion of the premise, and under 21 are allowed in the unliscensed section. Take for example Dave & Busters. Under 21 are allowed IN the establishment, but in the center of the main room is a bar. Under 21 are not allowed to approach, sit at, lean on, or even purchase a coke from that area. Seeing as how geocaching is a family activity, you should probably give this idea strong consideration. On the flip side, there are certainly enough cache in Wisconsin that if one (or a few) can’t be hunted as a family, or by those under 21, its probably not really a big deal. Covert Cache is one of this nature that comes to mind. Hope all this rambling helps! 08/27/2002 at 4:39 am #1744977In Wi, or at least the local laws are similar in that people under 21 can be in, but not near the bar area or purchase soda. We’ll have to check in on the specifics of that and post the laws if we do this cache. What we were thinking concerning this being a family activity, is that in Wi it is completely legal for anyone under 21 to come in, sit and have a soda IF their parent/gardian is present. So this would not pull away from a family activity. (Although, this does bring to mind another location near this one that could ‘counter’ the age specifications of this area. hmm… more ideas. hehe) We were also thinking, that we could have it counted as a ‘virtual’ cache for those who don’t enter. They can describe something of the location that wouldn’t be seen anywhere near here without a problem so that might be an idea too. More to think about. hehe Thanks for the reply!

[email protected]08/27/2002 at 12:10 pm #1744978The best people to ask would probably be those who granted permission for you to do that cache… I’m assuming they are the owners of the establishment. They’d be most familiar with the laws in question, plus any additional rules of their own. If access is restricted to minors, you can just explain this in the cache description. 08/27/2002 at 12:21 pm #1744979You may also want to ask geocaching.com ahead of time, describe the cache location, and find out whether or not they will approve it. If they say “no” your other option would include listing it on one of the other internet sites such as http://www.navicache.com. In general it sounds fine to me as long as you specify the age restrictions in the cache description and the fact that it’s on commercial property.
