12/22/2002 at 5:14 am #1720906Slim Pickins. That was a cowboy character actor and what many of us show up for new caches in our local area. Rather than suffer burn out, which some of us might be showing symptoms of, I think the time has come to recycle some good cache areas. Maybe retire some caches and place new ones? As I did last winter, I intend to be out there each weekend, weather and snow level permitting. Also have a couple caches soon to be placed. One in a recycled but still relatively virgin area that will require some skills in waypoint projections and triangulation. Kanook and I hiked around two miles checking it out today. Another in an unexplored area, geocaching wise, that should be a good hike with some good scenery. This area seems to be underutilized and due for some action. Oh, and dare I inquire about some of the “frozen water” caches? I’ve walked on some streams recently that greatly decreased the difficulty of the hunt. What happened to that cache on Muskego Lake? Might the Carpe Cache be accessable by ice? There’s that one on Okauchee Lake that might be accessable on ice. Then again, “Under Where?” is probably done for the season because of ice. Many of us can’t take the time to drive a couple hours to new concentrations of caches. Lets think about how to keep the local caches coming. Special thanks to those who have place new caches recently.

I HAVE to drive an hour to even find a single cache.. it’s not that I have an option.. sometimes it’s so sad to see that snagging even a cluster of 4-5 will take me a full day.. will enjoy getting back to Milw come spring.. til then.. I’m off spreading my caching-wings in the warmth.. but I’ve set up a few new caches this winter for any that wish to brave central Wisconsin.. as well as put “Winter-friendly” etc on some cache pages… Enjoy!
~The Lil Otter12/24/2002 at 4:20 am #1745055Lacking local caches to go on, I spent all day Sunday hiking around my targeted area carrying a loaded up ammo box and three other smaller caches in my backpack expecting to place all but perhaps one of them. The result was two placed and three miles of hiking around trying to find the right spots. Four PM came and I was running out of daylight. So, had to abandon my second entry into the depths of the forest. Now, do I sneak out of the house Wednesday to do some more plotting? But a question more to the topic. Several caches have popped up that require some distances to be covered that require driving from point to point. How would you all feel about more such hunts? Any recommendation as to total miles? I’m thinking a good winter time hunt would maybe cover a dozen miles or so and require finding some micro caches or existing information along the way to end up to the final cache. Sound like a possibility?

Waukesha12/24/2002 at 2:24 pm #1745056I think it sounds great! Our “Feel The Need For Greed” geocache definately needs a motor vehicle to get from cache to cache! But we give credit where credit is due. You get to log a find at each stage of the geocache that you find. That way, those that can’t do it in one day can still log their finds. Although, I have noticed that this geocache doesn’t get very many geocachers…so, I don’t know if others do enjoy multi-stage or multi-cache types that you drive from waypoint to waypoint. We would sure like to do one! 12/24/2002 at 4:02 pm #1745057After more than 3 months, my OIT Trailside multicache is still waiting for its first finder. Normally multicaches are not my thing, so I created a type of multicache that I would like to hunt. Judging by the lack of interest, I must be a real geocaching maverick. 12/24/2002 at 7:27 pm #1745058We are in the planning stages of an extensive multicache hunt which will require driving from one to the other. If everything works out you will be able to log finds at many of the stops and we are trying to place them in areas with other caches so others can be hunted at the same time. This does take some time to set up and plan but after the holidays we will be at it again.
We also plan on doing Ken and Robins multi but we thought it would be best done on bikes and since the weather has turned to winter we were planning on waiting until spring. Wish we would have been able to do it already.

With 20+ miles, we are holding out for a long weekend with temperate climate conditions. That will probably be a few more months. You seem concerned Ken, is there some sort of hurry? Merry Christmas and keep on caching.
tb12/25/2002 at 4:14 am #1745060I’ve kept an eye on OIT. One of the things on my wish list is a trailer hitch and bicycle rack to fit in it for my new Subaru. I got the bike but right now it only gets used to keep up with Kanook on his runs around the block. An appology is in order from me. I’ve implied and expected to get a nice hunt or two put together and ready for this weekend. While I usually can hike a few miles with absolutely no trouble, my knee will suddenly give me trouble for no apparent reason sometimes. Usually it is for only a few moments. Today while finishing lunch, I stood up and the knee couldn’t take weight or straighten out. This time it is worrying me. Some years ago, I broke my leg in two pieces and had some resulting knee and ankle damage. I’m hoping that my luck has not run out and I’ll be ok to continue my hiking very soon. Sometimes I have ideas and plans and can’t contain my enthusiasm, so I open my mouth too soon. Sorry.

With so much widespread “first finder fever” out there I’m a little surprised no one has gone after this one. I guess people are not ready for a strenuous cache hunt. (Yes, I am teasing and taunting now.) Merry Christmas, everyone! 12/25/2002 at 6:56 pm #1745062quote:

What, no trailer hitch and bike rack on the back of the Goldwing yet? You got everything else on that baby 12/25/2002 at 10:36 pm #1745063Actually, the Gold Wing does have a trailer hitch! The former owner pulled a pop-up camper with it.
