I love it when I ask a question, then answer it! Is the oldest active cache in Wi Pike Powder Hike? http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=945

Yup, Pike Powder Hike looks to be oldest active cache in WI. It also happens to be the very first Geocache that I found. Found it in April of 2001. Back then there were only about 8 caches in Wisconsin.

I am thinking about, perhaps, writing an article for submission to wigeocching newsletter regarding this cache and perhaps the first ten finders.
Something like, How did you discover geocaching, what was your first memorable experience while geocaching Pike Powder hike, suggestions for newbies, etc. Perhaps a few snapshots. Any pne interested in sharing?

Sounds like a great idea for an article.

It looks like I was the 11th finder of the cache. Out of the first 10 finders, it looks like only 4 became active in the sport. 6 out of the first 10 finders have less then 6 finds on their scoreboard.

I’d be glad to talk about the cache and submit some photos. Do you want to email a list of questions for people to answer?

Along with comments from finders, It would be great to hear from Ken, the cache placer, about the cache history. The cache has been plundered and moved several times. Ken has done a great job keeping it Wisconsin’s oldest active cache.

Yes, I’m sure there are lots of very interesting stories Ken could share with us on his history of the cache.

I’m excited about the article! Thanks!

Yes there are a few good stories associated with that cache. One of the most frustrating at the time (and amusing now) concerns an email confrontation with an out-of-state geocacher who logged the cache as a find even though he never found it. How did I know he didn’t find it? Because it was stolen at the time and I had not yet replaced it with another cache.
