Do you think it is time for me to retire the Swamp Trail cache? The recent posts have me a bit concerned. When I hid the cache I had no idea of the activity that apparently goes on there.

I thought I saw George Michaels there the other day!

    I would retire the cache

I think any males finding the cache in the future will be nervous about bending over to pick it up.

If this area is indeed being monitored by police, it’s not fair to Geocachers to send them into suspicious looking situations.

There are some parks in the Milwaukee area that are well known homosexual pickup spots. If you drive through the park, the roads are lined parked cars, each with a lone male occupant. After meeting their new friends, these guys take to the woods to consummate their new found friendships . Police often target these areas after citizen complaints of males frolicking naked in the woods.

If this is one of those “meeting” spots, Geocachers are likely to encounter the below situations:
[*]Geocacher run-ins with police being questioned what they are doing.
[*]Encounters with suspiciuos males following them into the woods.
[*]A family of Geocachers running into a couple of guys playing nude leap frog in the woods. (try explaining that to your kids).

Very interesting descriptions Grousetales, but I do agree with you 100%!

Wow! When I was there, I figured all the guys parked there were just killing their lunch break. Nobody followed me in. I don’t know if I should be glad or insulted.

Rather than close the area to geocaching, why not open the area to paint-balling? No pun intended.

So what scares you more: finding hunters at Jingle Bell Rock or finding ‘hunters’ at Swamp Trail…?

It was interesting to read the posts of those who observed the suspicious behavior going on. It’s good that we let each other know about what we experience at a geocache. That’s why I always like it when people take time to describe their hunt, instead of merely writing something such as “Found it today. Took nothing.” On the other hand, I don’t think we should necessarily archive our caches just because this kind of behavior was observed there. Leave it up to the geocachers to read the posts and decide for themselves, I say. Maybe if enough of us continue to visit despite this sort of reputation, the park can return to family-oriented use.

There was a similar situation this summer with caches placed at Lizard Mound County Park near West Bend. For awhile it became a hangout for similar “male bonding” activities. I let Team Rusch know about this after they placed one of their poker caches there, but I didn’t let it keep me from enjoying the park and finding the cache, and later finding sbuksoky’s caches there. When some friends of mine heard I was in Lizard Mound park by myself, they raised their eyebrows and said “You were in THAT park?” To me, their reaction was ridiculous, because people have visited this park for literally thousands of years, as evidenced by the burial mounds. To stop visiting this treasure of a park just because of a recent reputation is near-sighted and unwarranted.

Wow, I guess I got up on a soapbox for a moment. Anyway, happy caching!

I was wondering about all the traffic at Swamp Cache yesterday (Jan 13). The thought had crossed my mind about it being a meeting place for gays. The weather was cold and windy, so I doubt there was any ‘leap frog’ going on in the bushes. I was observed at the cache, so perhaps it should be checked to make sure it’s still there.

I was out there on 1-7-03 and rehid it. Put a bunch branches over the cache. When I get a chance i’ll go and check to see if it is still there this week.

I would have to agree with kbraband. The best thing to do would to intimidate rather than be intimidated. If many of us frequent the site it may just clean things up. (Lots of potential for puns here but i resisted)[ ]

I still think we should contact “Spideruser” of the Chicago group and see if we can’t set up a paintball event. We could call it “shoot the moon”
