One cache idea I’m thinking about requires projecting a waypoint. I’d likely do it in meters as more GPS’s would have that capability than in feet. Some may not have it at all. I’d like to know if your GPS cannot waypoint project.

I also wonder if there is a small spreadsheet formula to project a waypoint from a known coordinate? I’d like to offer that to those that have Pocket PC’s or PDA’s and Documents To Go, as an alternative to built-in projection function.

I think it refers to “what are the coordinates of a point xxx feet from where I am at yy degrees direction.”

I think my Legend does that, but I don’t have it on me at the moment to check.

    Steve,
I know the Meridian line has some issues with waypoint projection. There has been talk that Thales has been fixing it through newer firmware, but I don’t think they have reinvented the wheel just yet.

I’ve personally tried to do some projections with my MeriGold, and the results were less than fabulous. Todd-O(GM100) and I were marking the corners of some hunting land back in October, and his GlobalMap 100 consitently put him right on the iron pipe. I, on the other hand, was roughly 65-80 feet off at each corner. We both had good signal, but I guess that Meridian thing leaves a lot to be desired.

Beyond that, I personally would still be very interested in doing a cache like that. Nothing that a good compass, the distance unit on the GPS, and some good old Boy Scout orienteering skills couldn’t manage.

Now I just have to head down to your neck of the woods and start tackling all of those Lake Country caches. That darned map keeps getting denser and denser.

Yup, the Legend has waypoint projection…. I used it for “Ritual of The Wizards Tower”

Seemed to put us “right on” the marks… it’s really a neato thing to do..

Yes – the Legend does do this rather nicely. If you do not have this feature – do not try Blue Mounds “O” where it is essential. It has helped on many other caches also and is a very handy feature.

For those not familiar, waypoint projection is creating a new waypoint from where you are currently located by telling your GPS to create a waypoint, for example, 300 meters away at a bearing of 60 degrees.

I found shareware for the PDA to do this but it costs $10. I’d think it could be created on a spread sheet. There is a free program to do this for your Windows computer from Mentor Software, called Forward/Inverse. You should be able to find it doing a Google search.

I know there are other ways of getting around not having waypoint projection. Perhaps I’ll make the cache and let everyone use their creativity to work the projection.

Looks interesting and along the lines of what I’m looking for. I downloaded it and will check it out further. Thanks!

Download the v4.02 update for Meridian. It fixes some waypoint projection issues. I haven’t tried waypoint projection since I installed that update, so I couldn’t tell you how good the fix is.

Incidently, I notice there is an additional way to do waypoint projection on the Meridian (and probably other units). Obviously, you can use the waypoint projection feature. But I have also projected waypoints by moving the cursor on my map out to the desired distance and heading on the map display.

BTW, do any modern units NOT have waypoint projection? Even my Yellow Garmin eTrex had the feature!

I have two relatively old GPSr’s, and neither of them do waypoint projection. I’ve done a little of this in the past, but leaving the goto to the original point, walk out until the number of feet (miles) is correct, and the bearing reads 180 degrees from where it should be. I’d love to try this method (as it’s the only one I have) on your new cache. Oh, by the way… my two GPSr’s are a Garmin 12Map, and a Garmin eMap.

I had the need to waypoint project on Jeff’s ”Wizard’s Tower”. I had only my eMap then and it couldn’t do that. I ended up coming home and doing it on Mapsource. I’ll have to try SBTT’s method.

I was looking at mapsource tonight and I couldn’t figure out how to project waypoints on it. Could you post a clue on how to do it in mapsource? Thanks

What I do is have the starting waypoint showing on the screen. Then I click on the ruler, or distance icon, and move the cursor on the starting waypoint until it highlights. Click on the mouse and now you are measuring distance from that waypoint. On the bottom of the screen it shows the distance, bearing and coordinates from the starting waypoint. So, if it want to project a waypoint of 27 degrees and 63 meters, I just change prefrences from statute to meters and now as I move the ruler around, it will show the distance and direction and what we are looking for, the coordinates of the projection.
