There was a bear thread recently on the gc.com site.

I do like your first protocol. It reminds be of the old joke where the two hunters were being chased by a lion. One stops to take off his boots and put on track shoes. The second says “A lion runs at 40 mph! You won’t be able to outrun him in those!”

The first replies, “I don’t need to outrun the lion, I just need to outrun you!”

I’ve spent a lot of time up north in the woods where bears are very common. For the most part bears will always avoid humans. They do not see very well but have a very keen sense of smell. Just try to avoid smearing honey, bacon grease or berry juice on yourself and you should be fine! One point worth noting, if you bring dogs with you while you walk around keep close eyes on them. The main concern up north is not bears but wolves and secondly coyotes. As some of you know they will be taking wolves off the endangered species list in Wisconsin. But for the most part wolves also will avoid humans.

I encountered some “bare” activity at Goosey Barclay last month. Some nut was sitting on the bottom of the big hill with all his clothes off reading a naughty magazine. I really didn’t care to investigate futher into his activities. I deal enough with that kind of stuff during my shifts at the parks, I certainly don’t need to on my off days!
