I’m sitting here waiting for a thunderstorm to clear, so we can go out caching.
What is driving us to take every opportunity to go out caching?
My fishing gear is sitting in the garage, untouched for another season, I‘m out caching.
I don’t have time to stop and get the car washed or the oil changed, I’m out caching.
Going out of state to visit family, we’re caching there and back.
The gutters need to be mended and the lawn needs to be mowed, I’m out caching.
We go to the discount store, grocery or hardware store; buy this and that to go out caching.
Old friends and family are long neglected; we’re with new friends out caching.
Skipped work one day, I’m out caching. Once I took an extended lunch to go out caching.
Old friends stopped by the house yesterday. I missed them, out caching.And when I am caching, I don’t have time to stop and eat.
Filling the gas tank is an interruption.
Rest stops are delayed for hours.When I’m not caching I’m dreaming of our next cache to place,
surfing the web for the latest and greatest caches.
I’m loading waypoints into the GPSr;
I’m printing cache pages and maps;
And I’m logging our finds.The storm has cleared. I don’t have time for this anymore. We’re going out caching.
07/05/2003 at 8:48 pm #1745482(smiles) I’m not that obsessed.. I actually enjoy my gardens and fixing things around the house.. dating.. having company over and entertaining, etc… I have had a geocache within 5 miles of me for more than several months now.. (it’s the first new cache within a 15 mile radius to me in over a year).. Just did it to celebrate the 4th of July..
BUT..
When I do go on my adventures.. I am totally in zone.. I love the fact that I can travel from cache to cache and get the feel of what an area’s like through the eyes of those that place caches. I thrive on learning as I go.. that’s why I am the biggest fan of virtual historicals.. be it a quick stop (driveby) where I just jump out of my van and absorb..(Beast.. your ice cream driveby is a perfect example.. I LOVE ICE CREAM and loved learning about the history) or a long delightful hike that takes hours to complete. Each is a treasure in its own right.
What really drives me is the fact that I can do this on my own.. all these safe spots that other cachers set out. I’ve seen amazing places that just take my breathe away.. I was to a President’s graveyard (a virtual) yet it made one of the most memorable experiences..
If anyone’s ever cached with me they’d know my energy level and excitement for this sport.. and even when I get to a confusing cache etc.. I then try to place myself into the geocacher’s mind.. ‘What is/was so important that they wished to share this area? What memories were here for them?’
SBukowsky’s virtual in Monches is a perfect example.. didn’t understand why I was standing at a telephone pole back then.. until I tried to enter his mind.. why he wanted to share this place. His love of motorcycles and that long stretch of busy hwy .. then it all made sense.. He hoped to bring us into his world and share his love of the open road and his love of cycles.Geocaching to me is not just finding a log book to sign.. but to actually bond with others from this sport.. and share their experiences/memories. That’s the real push for me… to share the beauty of a place that might go unnoticed by the normal eye. That’s what keeps me going because there’s something new around each and every geocache ‘corner’ to discover.
Treasures of learning.. Treasures to find..
To sum it all up:
I think the only thing I neglect is opening my mail.. all my bills are auto-pay.. so that stacks up (grins).. but it is great kindling for my campfires in my back yard.
