…where you couldn’t find a cache if it were in the middle of an empty field in a 55-gallon drum painted fluorescent orange?
I was definitely not feeling The Forceâ„¢ today. I think I tallied 7 no-finds today. I think part of the problem was as the day wore on, I was just getting frustrated at my lack of luck.
8-16. Sigh. I feel like the Brewers. I was hoping to hit 200 today, but I guess that’ll just have to wait.
I think I need to take a geo-break…

07/06/2003 at 2:41 am #1745483Yes, I have. I like to use the analogy of not being able to find a bar of soap in an empty bathtub. Sometimes I hope that the cache or waypoint is indeed missing, but usually someone logs a find shortly after. Sometimes I blame my DNF on having my dog along and not being able to concentrate on the search. Other times I just don’t care to look all that hard because the trip there was enough reward.
I had one a couple weeks ago. I went to the cache and used the clue. I found the spot that just had to be where the cache was, but nothing. Later on, I read someone found it out in the open a ways away from the intended spot. I wonder why I didn’t find it? Oh well, I figure finding it or not finding it or running up my totals doesn’t put a dollar in the bank. I’ll just keep a watch on my DNF’s and come back when the time is right.
One thing I am curious about. Were there hints or not? Good ones or too general to help?

Waukesha07/06/2003 at 3:08 am #1745484The hints varied from none at all to not obvious to pinpointing the location exactly. I was even having trouble with the pinpoints.
I think it’s just live any other thing. You get into a slump, and even if you keep going, it just doesn’t get any better. You just need to know when to stop and say “enough” and wait for another day.

LOL
The bathtub is empty Steve, there is no bar of soap there. We know how you feel and loved both analogies. I think some NFs are inevitable. I can recall standing in an open area under a clear Indiana sky with fresh batteries in the GPSr and watching the needle swing this way and that as the digital distance went through a list of random numbers suitable for filling out a lottery card. Then there are days we have had rock solid fixes on THE location and came up empty … rather humbling. kaka occurs.
07/06/2003 at 3:31 pm #1745486Dave I took a look at some of your NF’s. I think I can offer the following without spoiling them.
Indiana – as you approach L/L zero, check for cache habitate to your left [north].
Missouri – when you are in the giant rubarb, check for cache habitat to the south.
Grape Tangle – Hunt in winter, approach from the north. Very dense bush and poison ivy.
California – Enter from the Parkway. If you can see a parking lot, you are in the wrong place. Besides, it’s private property. As you reach L/L zero look for cache habitat 50-75 feet in front of you [down hill] just off trail.

Now that I think about it, that would be the case, wouldn’t it? I concur about the Grape Tangle. I kind of circled in on that one, first passing by the correct northern entrance then going east of it and then entering from the south. Much crawling and such was necessary and then the cache was pretty easily seen. Once the cachework was tended to, I looked at my breadcrumbs and saw that I had passed rather close to here from the north and thus found the easier way that I should have taken in. I seem to remember some kind of small pool like a sunken bathtub very near by. I hope this isn’t too much of a spoiler

07/06/2003 at 8:54 pm #1745488I saw that little pool and was wondering what the heck something like that was doing here.
I concur, though, that this was probably the wrong time of year to do this cache as I couldn’t even see the ground with all the growth. As for the poison ivy, either I didn’t come across it or I’m immune as I was wearing shorts and sandals and didn’t itch.
At any rate, I’m glad that it was just me having a bad day and not a different problem that I was starting to wonder about…
