A while back (I think it was on these here WGA message boards) I saw a thread having to do with tick removal. I thought to myself “Good Idea”. Well, yesterday my wife and I were out in Gov. Dodge State Park, and we came across quite a few ticks. I chased one off of my clothes, my wife over the rest of the day (and evening) chased 3 more off of her clothes. We got home, showered, and did a tick check, and found no more. At 6:00 this morning, she wakes me up to tell me she has one on her right shoulder.
Remembering the information I found here, I cut a piece of soda straw length-wise, and slid it under the tick. I then took a piece of thread and looped it around the soda straw then slid it down around the tick and tightened the knot. This gave me a good hold of the tick. I pulled on the thread for a while, and the head came out a little, but it was still very well attached, then my thread fell off. I repeated the above process, this time getting the thread around just the mouth-parts of the tick. I pulled steadly (but much, much, harder than I would’ve thought) for a long time, but the little bugger would not let go. So, I just steadily and slowly increased the amount of tension (I was pulling much harder than I thought I should) until “Pop” it came out. It looks like the tick is completely in tact, leaving nothing behind.
This was a great bit of information I got off of these boards, which really helped. I looked back to try and find the original thread, but could not find it.
Thanks to whoever posted it in the first place!

10/26/2003 at 3:14 pm #1745848Glad to hear that this worked for someone. I tried it on my dog a few weeks ago. He picked up a tick while grouse hunting. I missed it on my initial scan, and found it once it was already gorging and filled with blood. It was impossible to hold the dog, position straw, slide the knot. I gave up after about 15 minutes and resorted to the tweezers.

My vet says to use the tweezers everytime. After our Kettle Moraine trip and the deer ticks fiasco, I hope to avoid them altogether.
Two of the deer ticks from Kettle Moraine were positive for lymes disease – so again be careful for another couple of weeks.10/27/2003 at 3:42 am #1745850What I found with a tweezers was that I could not feel how hard I was squeezing the tick. I feared that I would make it explode before I could pull it all the way off. The thread method worked very well, as all of the force that was applied was exactly in the correct direction.
