My son is in the planning stages of his Boy Scout Eagle project. We found an old cemetery in our area that has not been maintained in 50 years. Many downed trees and tons of overgrowth needs to be removed. The cemetery is located about 50 yards off the road, so a trail would need to be made etc. He will need tons of help for this project…………We were planning on having hot dogs and hamburgers etc.
My question is, would people actually come out for this if we made it an event cache? Our hopes are to make it a permanent cache once it’s all completed. This would be located clear out here on the western side of Wisconsin, but thought I’d ask you folks if it was a viable option for getting volunteers. I’ll probably post this on the Minnesota geocaching website as well……..
Thanks for any advice ya’ll can give me!
11/23/2003 at 5:59 pm #1745922Plan and post the event… they will come. You might get even better response if you first put together a few events locally to allow for some bonding before you tackle your project. The project not only sounds worthwhile, but it might be a lot of fun as well.
tb11/23/2003 at 7:06 pm #1745923I figure if an event is going to last longer than an hour, there has to be a minimum of one potential geocache found for each hour (or 4 for each 50 miles driven) Lots of good food and drink will also make cachers magically appear.
For a project like you are talking about, good weather helps too. Don’t forget- someone owns that property! And where is all the brush going to go? Who becomes liable if someone cuts their GPS in half, etc.
Wost case scenario, only 2 people show up, & you spend the day doing the best you can. It’s still a great accomplishment, even if it’s not all you hoped for.
11/24/2003 at 12:30 am #1745924Let me throw 2 cents in as a volunteer part-time admin approver for Wisconsin and the approver for Iowa. Please refer to the guidelines posted at geocaching.com to make sure your event will qualify as a CITO event. Find the guidelines here: http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#event
Here’s an excerpt:Event Caches
Event caches are gatherings for geocachers by geocachers to discuss geocaching. After the event has passed, the event cache is archived. While a music concert, a garage sale, a ham radio field day or an orienteering event might be of interest to a large percentage of geocachers, such events are not suitable for submission as event caches because the primary focus of these events is not geocaching and the primary attendees are not geocachers. In addition, an event cache should not be set up for the sole purpose of drawing together cachers for an organized hunt of another cache or caches. Such group hunts are best organized using the forums or an email distribution list.
For geocaching events that involve several components, such as a day-long group cache hunt that also involves a seminar and dinner, only a single event cache covering all components should be submitted.
CITO Event Caches
The idea of Cache In Trash Out (CITO) came about in the fall of 2000 as a way for geocachers to contribute to the beautification of our local parks and lands. You may find more information about the CITO program at http://www.geocaching.com/cito.
The CITO event cache category was added to differentiate cleanup events from other types of event caches. Use this category when you are asking geocachers to show up on a particular day to pick up litter at a park, remove piles of junk near a popular waterfront, etc. Do NOT use this category for a physical cache that is placed in an area that is need of cleanup – just mention the CITO opportunity on your cache page.
If you have an event you feel fits within the spirit of this unique category, yet are still unsure, please seek permission before submitting.
11/24/2003 at 12:31 am #1745925I’m from River Falls also and curious about what cemetery you’re looking at. Can you give me a name or general location of the one you’re looking at?
11/25/2003 at 12:04 pm #1745926From River Falls, take Hwy 29 west, then take cty rd E south. Turn left on 630th, then right on 1000th. go south about 1/2 mile and the cemetery is on the left side. (After the 2nd house on the left) You cannot see it from the road. The coordinates for the NW corner of the cemetery are N44 45.686 W092 38.017. This will at least tell the general area. Please do not cut through the neighbors yard. LOL. You will have to bushwack. This cemetery is private property, and permission has not been given for any activity there as of yet. Also, its a common hunting area, so watch out for flying lead objects.
Thanks everyone for your imput………I’ll let ya’ll know what happens.
