We have just started to try to build a collaborative relationship with Land Managers in the area…I have been speaking with the Park Manager of a local State Park several times this week and have set up a meeting this Friday afternoon to potentially place some caches together.

I wanted to share my experience thus far and will keep you all posted. When I made first contact regarding permission I received a flat “NO” with explaination…so I proceeded to explain geocaching a bit more. I was surprised that when I first asked about her prior knowledge of geocaching that the park manager said she was very familiar with geocaching (appearantly they had an “inservice”)…thus the instant No resonse, but I found that there were MANY misconceptions out there. (that they are burried…that the “treasures” are valuable and they were worried that they would be responsible for them…what cache containers were, etc…I could literally go on for hours) Since then I have received permission to place caches in this State park and she is excited to do this TOGETHER as well as to learn more about it(Friday afternoon)…her entire tone and understanding of what geocaching is all about has changed. I have found that a little education goes a very long way!

I know that Ken and WZBT03 (among others) have worked hard in their areas to educate area officials regarding geocaching (and continue to do so), and would encourage others to work in their areas on this…it doesn’t take long…and if ‘Lil Ole me can do it I know anyone can…they are just people…and it could make a big difference to the future of our activities!

    Happy caching (and placing)-

Well Done! To turn a “no” into a “yes” is a great acomplishment. It takes a special kind of person to go out there and do what you have done. Congratulations and Thank You!

Way to go, Rhonda! Nice work. It just shows to go what a positive attitude and a willingness to work with instead of against park managers can achieve. Any geocacher can do it if they just put forth the effort.

Getting past the objections is the key to becoming a great sales professional. You may be on your way toward a new career.

      Excellent job!
Its amazing what a few minutes face to face can do to help people understand geocaching.

Wow!! I think there is a career for you in selling houses or cars!!! Turning a no into a yes is one a very difficult thing to do.

      According to Dale Carnegie:

If a person says”no”, all of his pride requires him to remain consistent. He may later feel that “no” was the wrong response, but he has his pride to consider. When a person says “yes”, his body remains open to ideas. There is physiological evidence that a person’s body responds to a negative answer. He is not just speaking two letters, his body, muscles, glands, and attitude retreat into a state of rejection that is hard to overcome by persuasion.

      Great job!!!

This is why those of us that can’t sell a ketchup popsicle to an eskimo are afraid to ask permission when geocaching is not explicitly or implicitly restricted. The fear of one ignorant individual being able to take away the ability for us to participate in an activity we enjoy in “thier” corner of the world. Not all of us are the next Dale Carnegie (even though we have read the book).

We agree completely. We have only placed caches in areas where geocaching has been implicitly approved. But none the less, this makes what Rhonda did so impressive.
