For the second time, I removed a live shotgun shell from a cache. Likely from a well intentioned hunter that decided to do some trading. I shudder to think of a child finding one and banging the primer side on a rock. Please be sure to remove such things from caches.

Yikes! That’s scary. Thanks for the warning!

It was an ammo box, right?

But seriously, even here in WI, there are some adults that would be scared to place their hand on a shotgun shell or bullet.

The last thing we need while trying to grow our sport is an unknowing geocacher coming across something like this and calling the police.

If you don’t feel comfortable about something you see in a cache & choose not to remove it, please post the information here or get in touch with one of us so that we can resolve the issue.

Before you place an object in a cache, think about the children that may be playing in those same woods. One bad incident could make geocaching looked upon in a negative way.

As an avid hunter, these type of items don’t scare me. I may be a little harsh here, but I think it’s VERY STUPID to place items like this in a cache.

Imagine a park official checking on a cache and finding live ammunition, or other inappropriate objects (drugs, alcohol, knives, fireworks, pornography, etc). Park personnel do check caches from time to time, and these types of items could put an abrupt end to Geocaching in the effected community. Dane County parks found some porn in a cache. Needless to say, this made a poor impression about Geocachers and caching in their parks.

It’s a very bad choice to place these items in the cache. I also feel it’s everyone’s DUTY to remove them, to help preserve the sport. The test is this: If it’s not something you would want your kids to see or play with, DON’T PUT IT IN A CACHE!

Thanks Steve for removing the ammo, and bringing it to everyone’s attention.
