Since I took over as the Approver for Wisconsin in March of 2003, I’ve learned of several areas that are off limits to caching. Many of these are not posted, and cachers don’t know about them until their cache is archived.

I’ve put together a short list of areas that have special rules. These are in Addition to the ones already listed on our “hiding a cache” page. I’ve asked our webmasters to update the “hiding a cache” page with some of these items. I’ve included many of the hyperlinks so you can see the data I’m working with.

    • State Natural Areas (SNA’s)– Caching not allowed.
    • City of Madison CONSERVATION PARKS– Off limits. No caching allowed.
    • City of Madison Parks – Cachers need to get permission. Admin will require name of permitter be included on cache page.
    • Dane County Parks – Special use permit required, $10.00 fee required. Admin will require name of permitter on cache page.
    • Waushara County Parks – Caching not allowed.
    • NPS lands – Caching Not allowed. This includes the St Croix National Scenic Riverway.
    • FWS lands – Federal Wildlife Refuges are off limits.
    • Caches need to be 0.10 mile (528 feet) away from existing caches in the area. The stages of a multi should also be this distance.
    • When submitting a multi cache, include the coordinates to all the stages in a note to the reviewer.
    • Virtual Caches -Cachers should know that these are under very strict guidelines. Existing, non-conforming virtuals were grandfathered and allowed to stay.
    • Other Off limits areas:Bridges, Military installations, public buildings, commercial caches, Dams.

This may be a handy reference if your planning a cache. One common mistake is placing a cache in State Natural Areas (SNA). You can save yourself a wasted cache by looking at the SNA map BEFORE you place a cache, or at least before you submit it.

    Hope this info helps,

This is one I haven’t heard before (stages of a multi, that is)

I want to rehide the final cache for “Red White and Blue” in a spot where it won’t be as easily found by non-cachers, but still keep the original coordinates that the prelim caches lead you to.

What I wanted to do was to rehide the container in a different area of the park, and affix a tag in the original location (dead tree) to bring you to the final.

Due to the size of the park and potential hiding spots, it may not be possible to get over the 528 foot distance.

    Am I SOL then?

Are you asking if all YOUR stages need to be 528′ feet away from each other? If so, the answer is “no”. You can place your own stages as close as you want to each other.

Each stage of a multi is reviewed and it needs to meet the same guidelines as though it was a single cache. So if you move the final cache, it just needs to be 528′ away from someone else’s cache.

When you submit a multi cache, reviewers will need the coordinates for all the stages. Each stage will then be reviewed. Once the cache is approved, we no longer have the data where all the stages are located.

Now if someone later submits a cache in the same area as a multi cache, it’s possible it may be approved, even if it’s too close the stage of a multi. Since we can’t see the multi stages any more, we won’t know if the cache is too close. It’ just one of those things that could happen.

Did I answer your question, or am I rambling?

    Oh………..

Makes sense now as to why there are so few caches in the Madison/Dane County area.

    bump.

There has been a lot of archived caches lately. Be sure to familiarize yourself with all the guidelines before placing a cache
