I’ve noticed that some of you use PDA’s for geocaching. As a newcomer, I’m wondering what you are using them for; are they being used in conjunction with GPS or to keep track of caches and waypoints or both? What is the PDA of choice? I’m always looking for an excuse to get another gadget.

    Thanks,

I think most of us that bring our PDA’s in the field have queries with cache listings on them so we can “go paperless”. Very handy on vacations too. They also allow you to decode the hints when you get stuck, without doing the laborious conversion one letter at a time.

Imagine the convenience having the cache page for every cache in the state in your pocket.

Now imaging having a quick way to sort through to the next nearest cache or being able to read the previous logs on the fly.

And when you get to the cache that requires math functions- it’s a calculator

Then realize how handy it would be to be able to automatically decode hints and take notes or record other vital information.

Then to top it all off, you could also have the phone numbers and e-mail addresses of all your caching cohorts handy too.

And if you buy a WI-FI capable model, you could go to the nearest hotspot to check your e-mail and log your finds.

    Ready to buy one yet?

Do you have any recommendations? (Oh boy, I’m gonna have some explaining to do!)

Look for something inexpensive on E-bay. In a thread just below this one, a cacher purchased a Palm III for $35 bucks. It is a GREAT way to start. You can download the PALM software for your desktop computer for free of the internet.

I use a Palm Zire 21 – not for geocaching yet, but it will do the job for going paperless. I actually get them free all the time from Dell as promo gifts and give them to people around my office.
