All this TB talk got me thinking….I’m going to give you all the background to the story before I get to why Shawano.

I got kind of a nice surprise a few weeks back… Anyone remember the “Spring Break on the Wolf” cache? It was in Shiocton and was washed away this spring. After one DNF, I drove out there to check it out because my “Swimmin Simon” TB had been previously placed there. The cache owner’s profile says he hasn’t logged on in over a year at GC.com. I posted a note to it where I gave Simon a proper goodbye and moved him to “Unknown”.

Jump forwatd three months to June 14th. Suddenly I get a notice that a note has been posted to his page. Interesting. I read it:

“found 6/02/04 north of shiocton wi. moved to 10 miles north of keshena wi, big smokey falls across from office.. good luck!”

I’ve emailed this guy a few times. He’s not a geocacher so I thought it was pretty cool of him to sign up and contact me about the find. But because of him not being a geocacher, he doesn’t have the means to rehide the TB.

After a few more emails from him, I discovered that Simon may still be in the original cache. See, this guy has hidden Simon 100 feet from the Big Smokey Falls office for me to come and collect. I asked it he’d buried it or what, and he replied:

“Swimmin Simon is not buried, he is still in a Tupper wear box. The office I
am referring to is for Big Smokey Falls rafting. The owner, Ralph Lyons, is a
friend of mine, and said that it was OK to cache Simon there. He is less than 100 steps from the office. Ralph knows the direction.”

So here’s where I’m going with this- I want to try and get up there soon, but I’m not sure when I’ll be able to. I’d like to go by on my way up north this weekend, but it’s pretty much way out of my way. The funny thing is that it ended up being about 20 miles south of my cabin in a place I pass every time I go there. Kind of neat.

Anyway, if there’s anyone in that area that could easily swing by and save him or that’s headed up there for the 4th weekend, I would VERY much appreciate it.

    Where is Big Smokey Falls?

If you were in Shawano, you would head north on 55/47 to Keshena then turn right where it splits off after Keshena onto Hwy. 55. Going north, the turn off to Big Smokey Falls is on the left hand side of Hwy. 55.

If anyone can do this and get him moving again, I would really appreciate it. otherwise I suppose I’ll get there when I get there. Either was, it’s kind of a fun story.

Thanks for adding a map, Miata. There’s also a large wooden sign with red lettering a little bit before the falls. It’s actually a very pretty place- and fun watching the rafters go over the falls.

I was North of Clintonville and around Embarass yesterday. That would have been a perfect time for me to head up and rescue your bug. You should ask the guy if he would like the container to stay there and resurect a cache there and use the whole story for a history of the cache and it’s contents.

I was the 1st finder of that cache and remember it to be a damp container then. It’s hard to think that drifting around in a river for that amount of time it would have been in good enough shape to figure out what it was all about and contact you.

I was thinking, I only know of two Shawano cachers: Lisavemt and BantamC. You might try sending them e-mail. One of them may be able to help you. BTW Isn’t that tribal land? That is about 40 miles from where it was originally placed. I am sure that isn’t GPS error.

It is- the guy’s email said he picked it up 10 miles from Shiocton (which was where it started). He must have been in the area and found it, then took it home with him. I’m not sure, but I know it didn’t float up to Keshena!

Yes, it is on the Menomonee Reservation. I don’t know what rules and such are in place about that, but the guy isn’t a cacher- just a nice person saving my bug Plus he’s gotten permission to place it there from the owner of the Big Smokey Falls raft place. Only problem is that it’s without coordinates.

Amazing about the whole container lasting, huh? It was damp one when I found that cache too. I was sure Simon would’ve sunk. Maybe it just ended up on shore when the water receded.

Isn’t there a way to list an address and have it turned into the co-ords? I’m not sure how to do it, but I’m pretty sure you could call upon our friend Cachew for help. I gave him my address once and he told me where I lived…try e-mailing him for help. If you can get the address of the shop that would help, right?

The coordinates for the star on Miata’s map are:

        N 44:56.616
        W 88:36.426

I plan to be in the Shawano area on Sunday and time permitting (no guarantees) may be able to pick it up. Do you want the whole cache picked up or just the TB? If I pickup the whole cache what do you want done with it? I will check this page before possible pickup.

if you get permission i would be happy to rehide on that land.

It’s probably a good half hour north of Shawano (past Keshena)- but it you could get it that would be great!

I don’t have any plans of my own to hide one there. Even with permission I wonder if there ae rules about reservations? There seem to be none other than virtuals on them. It would be kind of cool to rehide it up there and give it a similar name to the original one though.

The cache itself never was mine so I have no idea what to do about that. I suppose it would be a good idea to pick it up so it’s not just left there. I don’t know what to do with it though. The owner seems to no longer be “playing” anymore.

Linus4Cache- I know exactly where the raft place it- coordinates are always nice to get you there if you don’t know though. The guy gave me basically a location (the office) and a radius (100 feet).

Basically all that needs to be done is to go to the office there where they do raft rentals and look in a 100 foot radius around that. That’s how this guy hid it for me- I think he must have wanted to leave a little challenge to retrieving it. He also said the owner, Ralph Lyons, knows where it is and could point it out.
