I am looking for a new gps and PDA and this is both in one. We never had a pda and was wondering if this is a good system for geocaching.

    IQUE 3600
    Garmin
    010-00264-00

Integrating the versatility of a PDA and the navigation of a GPS in one handheld unit to offer the most powerful travel companion possible. The iQue 3600 is a must for any business traveler.

    Full Description
The iQue 3600 is the first PDA to include integrated GPS technology. With the power of Palm OS® 5 and the dependability of Garmin® GPS technology, this “Super PDA” redefines multi-tasking. Integrated software not only allows you to look up appointments or contacts, but also locates and routes you to them with voice-guidance commands!

This PDA uses a 200 MHz processor along with Garmin’s Que Technology to deliver location awareness, electronic mapping, automatic route calculation, turn-by-turn voice guidance, and map data interface to the iQue 3600. Que technology enables users to see where they are, find a street address, know where the next turn is via visual and voice guidance, get back on track when they’ve strayed off course, and navigate efficiently to their desired destination.

The built-in 32 MB of memory allow you to download a variety of mapping data to help you navigate your way more effectively, whether in an urban environment or a wilderness environment. The iQue also offers an SD memory card slot to allow you to expand the memory to offer even more mapping possibilities. Included with the iQue is the MapSource City Select North America v5 CD that automatically calculates routes with both audible and visual directions. The MapSource City Select North America offers detailed maps for most most cities and towns throughout the U.S. and major metropolitan areas in Canada. Along with an abundance of memory, the iQue offers a built in voice recorder to allow you to record messages or reminders while you are on the fly. A built in speaker allows you to play these messages back with the push of a button, or play MP3 files. Downloads will be a snap with the USB cradle and HotSync® technology. No need for batteries, the iQue 3600 has a built-in Lithium Ion battery that will charge in the cradle or with the adapter.

Just one thought from my initial caching experiences. I started out with a GPS Companion Cradle on a Palm m515. It worked wonderfully for nearly one hundred caches. However, I was lucky not to have dropped it in the river, banged it against rocks, given it to the kids, left it on in the rain, set my backback on top of it, etc., etc.

These units are often nice and handy but often not very rugged.

As far as a PDA is concerned, I’m sure it will do you just fine. (Wait, I think I hear jthorson ready to chime in here about the benefits of PocketPC over Palm… )

Like I said, I survived almost 100 caches with mine, but I really had to be careful all the time and cringed when it got dirty or wet or smooshed. Personally I like the separate GPS unit that I can bang around and the Palm that I can keep away from the elements.

i would be concerned about being able to see the screen in full sunlight outside. often the screens on pda’s get hard to read in sunlight, unless your caching inside(yes i used it as a verb).

I loved the idea, and I think it’s probably a great unit. The one downfall is that I doubt it is any where near as rugged as most GPSr’s. This is the only reason I have not jumped on the bandwagon.

Nice to see that the battery life has improved to 10 hours. When I was last looking for a gps, the man at REI said the batteries only lasted 30 minutes. This would get you to a short cache and back.
I would be very weary of the fragility of the unit. It looks rather fragile and that would worry me when we are talking this kind of money. The man at REI also said he knew a guy who had one and he has taken it back 3 times in 6 months even though it rarely leaves the car.
To me, the ideal combo is a nice, rugged gpsr and a cheap, used pda. I have cracked and scratched the screen on my pda but who cares, I only paid 40 bucks for it.

I have the garmin I que and it is great for caching. It is NOT great for FINDING the cache. You can Import all of the caches in an area to your Ique and then they show up on the map.

You click the cache on the map you want to visit, the Ique guides you there VIA Voice Turn to Turn and then, the Ebook of the cache page pops up when you press the Info Button, it is Great. I am totaly paperless when I cache. I do use my Etex Vista for the find. Once I find the cache I Voice Record it into my Ique what I want to type in the log when I get home and thats it.

I have found a few caches with the Ique and it is a little challanging.

If you have any other questions drop me a email.

      Thanks.
