The other day I did a long, out of my area, trip to cache towards Madison. On the way back I had plenty of time to consider the expenses involved.
12 hours 50 minutes – 770 minutes
372 miles
18 caches found
3 dnf’s
4 could not find access12.83 gallons gas at $1.95 gallon = $24.99
or $.35 / mile = $130.20for the 18 caches found –
– 20.66 miles each
– 42.7 minutes per cache
– $1.38 or $7.23 per cachefor the 25 attempted –
– 14.88 miles per cache
– 30.8 minutes per cache
– $.99 or $5.21 per cacheCould someone plant a couple of hundred caches near me, so I will not have to drive so far?!

I would have camped out and made it a two day trip, which would have been more cost effective considering the driving time and additional number of caches to be hunted.
Give it a few months, and there will be 200 more caches near you. And you can take that to the bank.

“A bad day of hunting is better than a good day at work” Dan09/02/2004 at 3:13 am #1747537Who cares about the money when there is fun and fellowship at stake? There are so many wonderful things to see and do along the way. When you consider the possibility of spending hours at a time with family and friends, travelling around in a vehicle, talking and laughing and searching…when you think about the fact that you actually sit down and share at least one meal together during each trip…when you consider the amount of time you spend walking, hiking, climbing, whatever…who cares about the money!!! When you consider the number of people you’ve met along the way, and the amount of fun you have trading stories…who cares about the money? Just be careful that caching doesn’t cost you more than money…it happens, and honestly…it sucks!

Sorry, not my territory. They will come though.

We are still working out some logistics. Then its a matter of getting them all placed.
Hope this will be close enough for you Marc!
09/03/2004 at 2:40 am #1747541I’m sure this was in jest. The Appleton area is starting to get a better cache base if you will.
