As some may know, we have not been real active lately because work, family and house repairs have taken over. But thanks to the Green and Gold Cache ‘n Bash, we have renewed energy in the sport. It was great to see some new and old faces and it just happened to land on a rare day off. I think most cachers go in cycles and we usually pick up the pace in winter and slow down in the summer.

Anyways, we wanted to do something different this weekend and after catching up on the gc.com message board, we knew just what to do. We found a thread anouncing that the Markwell cache “Mission 12: Blind Canal” GC1596 was now changed back to an APE cache. If you are unaware of such caches, read Markwell’s descriptions at http://members.aol.com/marklent60544/myhomepage/Geocaching/markwellcachemain.htm There are only 3 active APE caches left in the world so this one is the closest to us.
We spent all day traveling close to six hours in the car with the kids to find one cache. We did find six other quick caches in the area but the trip was planned for just one big find. The reason for this long ride? Just so we can have an APE cache icon on our stats page! I am not sure this is a sane way to spend a Sunday but we had alot of family fun. Some may shake their heads and say it was a waste of a day but I think they just have icon envy (LOL). Anyways, hope to see some old and new faces on the trail soon, I’ll be the one in the black facemask, a second hand old blue down coat and big yellow gloves as fasionable as ever.

Just last week, I happened upon Markwell’s website and found out about that APE cache too. I mentioned it to Bec as a possible trip we could take next year. Doesn’t sound nuts to me at all!

Girl’s Day Out team went out this morning (12-19-04) and found the HUGE APE cache container. What a treat to have this find!

Hey – thanks for all of the kind words (just popped in and saw my name mentioned). I’m amazed at the response this cache has gotten since it reverted back to APE status. More amazing is the fallout of some of the other caches in that desolate caching area that are getting hit just because of their proximity!

    Neat.

Glad you’re enjoying it and heading down to the flatlands.

Yes, the APE cache did present a bit of a drive for us but it was all in fun. We found the other caches around the area before heading back.

We just grabbed that cache this last Saturday. We now have all 16 icons on our stats page!
