      Just wondering what someones take is on finding benchmarks. Since it is winter and the snow has once again arrived, man I hate winter, I was thinking about finding some of the ones that might be above snow level.
      I guess that caches are more fun but hard to find under snow, or am I wrong?

        Benchmarks can be cool if you keep your expectations low. There are a lot of listed benchmarks out there that are gone. Also the map datums are different and actual location might vary due to the different survey methods.

        With the lack of “treasure”, it’s not as fun for the little ones, but I find there is always some satisfaction in finding something using using a map & compass (or gps).

        For the record… i’ve found more benchmarks while hunting caches than I have while hunting benchmarks.

          I have found a handful of benchmarks this past winter, and was surprised to see things listed as benchmarks that I never knew were benchmarks, such as radio towers, water towers, lighthouses, and chimney tower stacks of old factories. I still think it’s neat to come across the mounted discs.

            From my house I can see 2 benchmarks — one is a water tower, and the other is a church spire. Pretty easy to claim them, but nifty nonetheless.

              This brings about an interesting question. For logging purposes, how do you know what the coordinates are at the tip of a chuch spire?

                It’s based more on the description than the actual coordinates.
