Round 28 stated-
One of the first known “geocachers” was is named Metsäsissit, who hunted locations in the Greater Helsinki, Finland area based on coordinates since the 1980s. Although they used 1:20,000 maps and half-a-millimeter measurement accuracy which gives 10-meter accuracy for the location, they started to use GPS in the early 1990’s to determine accuracy. When SA was was removed by the Clinton Administration May 1st, 2000, a group on the sci.geo.satellite-nav newsgroup started what we now know as Geocaching.
To score for round 28-
1. List the 8 newsgroup headings that were posted on the sci.geo.satellite-nav newsgroup yesterday (May 28th)2. Define the abbreviation “SA”.
3. Name the person who started the website that eventually became Geocaching.com.
4. Name the president of Groundspeak, and provide a link to two (2) of his user profiles.
5. According to the aforementioned profiles, how many cache hides & finds does he have total?
Proper responses were-
1. The newsgroup headings were:- Online maps of the UK with Lat/Lon
- Magellan Color clarity
- Multi-Form Elliptic Integrands (Long)
- Nextel i530 and GPS
- CeBIT2005 GPS report is up
- Map Send software
- Sportrak color
- AUSTRALIAN RED LIGHT AND SPEED CAMERA POI DATA
2. Selective Availability (SA), means that the satellites “lie” about where they are, and the satellite clocks lie about the correct time. This prevents a civilian receiver from doing better than 100m accuracy (95 percent horizontal accuracy) in stand-alone mode.
3. On May 3rd, a container of goodies was hidden by a someone outside of Portland, Oregon – in celebration of the removing of Selective Availability. By May 6th the cache was visited twice, and logged in the logbook once.
Mike Teague was the first to find the container, and built his personal web page to document these containers and their locations that were posted to the sci.geo.satellite-nav newsgroup.
In July of 2000, Jeremy Irish found Mike Teague’s web site and found his first cache outside of Seattle, Washington. Recognizing the potential of the game (but never expected the growth), Jeremy approached Mike Teague with a new site design, used the name Geocaching, and developed a new web site adding virtual logs, maps, and a way to make it easier to maintain caches as the sport grew. The site was alive for a while, but the official torch was passed to Jeremy on September 6.
4. President of Groundspeak (The parent company to Geocaching.com) is Jeremy Irish.
Links to two of his user accounts are:
Jeremy – http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?id=3
iryshe – http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?id=25. Account “Jeremy” lists 199 finds and 3 hides, “Iryshe” lists 0 finds and 38 hides

Thanks to Cathunter for the trivia and time spent preparing the game. We learned quite a few things searching for answers.
03/31/2005 at 2:36 am #1748664Congratulations Miata — although you are now my sworn enemy…..(just kidding, maybe)
And thanks, I think, Russ for the fun competition. It’s been fun, educational, frustrating, anxiety-laden, and just and all-out great time.
I guess 3rd place isn’t so bad….

03/31/2005 at 2:54 am #1748665Why did I know I was going to make “enemys”? Just like the ones I have made by my first to finds in the Valley.
Seriously, I have to thank Russ for the contest! It sure helped pass the time waiting for Spring to get here! It was a lot of fun and great competition! Hope to see you all at the Campout!

And thanks Russ for this great trivia game! It’s been a lot of fun (sometimes downright irritating, lol) and quite educational. Like another said – a perfect way to pass the time waiting for spring to arrive!

03/31/2005 at 4:55 pm #1748667I was looking for the question regarding the list of caches along I90/94 (on the way to Lake Wissota). Was it question 19? I don’t see #19…

I lost a little data here and there. I fixed round 16, & you will now find what you were looking for.
Thanks for everyone’s kind words!
