How about if we list our favorite (cheap) things to leave. Maybe we’ll help each other get some new ideas and upgrade our caches a bit

My favorites have been bubbles- you can get a 6 pack for $2, beaded bracelets- pack of 8 for $3, mini magic 8 balls- pack of 4 for $2, and state quarters (guess how much?).

My list of bad ideas- Play Dough. It gets hard too fast sitting outside. I haven’t found any that has actually been usable yet And anything terrible… (like plastic spoons LOL).

Anyone else have good or bad ideas?

matchbox cars, toy animals, armymen, for boys at least. I know someone who leaves small decks of cards.

Watch out for bubbles….the containers can leak. I have found compasses at the dollar store and left them behind. It’s a good segway into teaching children on how to read a compass.

    nice idea for a thread.

we like to leave rocks…….we get packages of polished rocks from oriental trading company and package them so they are a little more water tight. oriental trading also has rocks called “break your own geode.” i remember being so facinated by rocks when i was a kid (apparently i still am much to geo’s dismay….especially when we are hiking down from devil’s lake with an already heavy pack!). we’ve also done the magic 8 balls. i’ve also made “fortune tellers” or “cootie catchers” (whichever one they were called when you were younger) as a kind of gimmick on how to find a cache.

A look through an Oriental Trading catalog shows lots of cool, useless things that kids love. We’ve left whoopie cushions, maze puzzles, puzzle balls, butterfly necklaces, magic shoelaces, and lots more I can’t remember. Zcards are cool – plastic cards with pieces you punch out to build a plane, car, dinosaur. These are nice because they are flat and fit in a lot of caches. Glow sticks are popular, too. For adults I’ve left filled Subway cards (but not for long – they will be discontinued in June), drink tickets for my local tavern (good for anything, not just alcohol), batteries, Where’s George dollar when I didn’t plan ahead, Leinenkugel stuff (dart flights, openers, magnets), can coolers, fishing bobbers, packaged fishing lures.

We have painted on glass rocks and left those. We also ordered the smashed pennies with the Geocache logo, those even go well in micros. We cleaned out all the toys in the house from kids fast food meals, including the teeny Beanies.
Any of the stores where everything is a dollar you can find some neat things.

I also went through my jewley box, as did my mom and my aunt for nice trinkets to leave in caches.

I am looking at leaving old comic books that I collected in college. I have no use for them and I can’t find a buyer. I plan on puting the more valuable ones in the ones I place. Toys from the dollar store, my daughter likes to leave plastic lizards, plastic sticky worms, and army men.

We try to find unique items to leave, and carry for different ages. We leave our share of games and stuffed animals for the kids, but have found some great items recently, including crystal world globes..watch for them. We also like to have a few themed items to leave…when in Door County, we left lighthouse items, when in the Black Hills, we left carved buffalo in some caches. We also have alien and other themed items. Make this fun for all…and don’t overlook garage sales for finding trading items.

They have a tendancy to freeze and break open in the winter, too.

I like leaving lottery tickets. Occasionally unscratched, but I like to give away the winners after I play the crossword puzzles. (I’ve got a five dollar winner just waiting for the right cache!)

I managed to get a load of tall golf tees that I’m leaving in caches by the handful! These go well with the golf balls left by many others!

We’ve made use of Oriental Trading Company too. I sometimes like to leave seasonally related items. Lately that’s been eggs (no not real ones!). Last fall, we were leaving little plastic candy-corn dudes.

We found some magnetic tops and base plates that have an astronomy theme that we are now leaving in caches as our signature item. On occasion I get several cool card games from NASA that have been left too. Although those are harder to come by.
Our son likes to find the bouncy balls, money, travel games, and neat key chains.
We’re finding it hard to find nice cache items without spending too much money. We try to leave items that we would want to find ourselves.

    Things that are bad
1.(at least in the northwoods):Smelly Soaps, Candles, and bubbles All these things will attract animals expecially bears to your caches.
    2. A generally bad thing Razor Blades or Razor Knives, We take these things out every time We find them, had them in our bag one time after we took them out and I cut my finger really bad once.

we usually go to the dollar store or walmart for our goods, and get the stuff we would want to grab ourselves
