Okay so I have a question…meaningless to some and meaningful to others:
At what point do we draw the line in censorship of our WGA Board Members?
This morning I read some things that made my mind race. I posted a note about them and not only were they deleted, the entire thread was closed because of it. This seems quite wrong to me as the posted notes were in fact my opinion, as stated several times. So…what are we allowed to talk about and what gets us a spanking?
Oops…my bad…that was two questions. No matter anyhow, this one will probably be delted as well.

04/28/2005 at 9:04 pm #1749223Generally moderators will step in when a post contains vulgar or off-color comments; personal attacks against other users, or any other violation of a specific rule for the forums you are posting in. This has been the general practice in every board I’ve been to and it seems to be the practice here.
I would doubt that this thread will be closed or deleted unless one of the above guidlines come into play.

Co-conspirator to make the world a better place…04/28/2005 at 9:57 pm #1749224I am the the guilty party!
I removed the thread because there were comments in it that were out of line.
It was removed to the BOD forum for discussion and returned with the offending remarks removed.
Dump on me if I went too far in trying to keep this site friendly.04/28/2005 at 10:18 pm #1749225Although I might have been offended if I had gotten to read the post, now I am rather unhappy that I don’t have that opportunity.
Maybe someone could e-mail a copy to me, so I could at least decide which is worse?
04/28/2005 at 11:10 pm #1749226This is a family friendly website and users need to post accordingly. Flaming and personal attacks turn people off from our website. I don’t think it is part of a “healthy discussion”. If a thread is turning into an attack, it’s seems to have run it’s useful purpose. There isn’t very much avantage to continuing the forum, other to let people vent.
This particular thread offended several people and it was locked. I sent a private email to Major Brat regarding a posting that was deleted.
I think we can do a better job of being constructive in our discussions. Offensive posts may be removed by the moderators or locked. Lets keep them from going that direction.
04/29/2005 at 12:20 am #1749227Only because of what I consider an unjust attack on Linus, I am breaking my vow not to participate in these forums.
The board of WGA seems to have taken on the attitude that only they know what is best for WGA, not the membership.
I read Robin’s posting this morning before it was removed and while it was a bit harsh toward one board member, it did ring so much of the truth that it warranted evaluation by the rest of the WGA.
Since when did the board members think that this whole thing is just about them (I am not talking about all of the board either, many understand its about all of us).I dropped my WGA membership in early March because I no longer wanted to be part of a organization that did not respect the right of the members to speak and decided something that was proven ineffective throughout history, censorship of the masses, does not make the problems go away.
I only rejoined a couple of days ago to vote for a COTM that was so deserving I could not resist. The recent political spin that has been given to COTM has made it very ineffective but I decided you can’t quit trying. If some board members can’t take the heat of honest criticism then perhaps they should reconsider their role.
Gee and I think these are some of the same board members who did the sock puppet thing not to long ago to criticize others caches without being indentified. Any of you care to fess up about that one? I happen to know who you are. Where was the board outrage at these attacks?Yeah Robin is right, we should keep this an open forum. The friendly part will come when we quit getting told how to act.
You don’t have to agree with me but please do not limit opinions to only what you think is right.
Oh no, I am posting on the forum again…..
Woe is me.04/29/2005 at 2:28 am #1749228quote:

04/29/2005 at 2:48 am #1749229I missed the offending post as well, so I don’t know what was said. However, I have done my fair share of moderating message boards and this comes up ALL the time. There simply is no way to make every person happy, no matter what the circumstances were. Get a group of people together, and opinions on what is acceptable or not will vary. I used to mod a debate board and a pregnancy site. Now, that made me want to poke my eyes out with a rusty nail :lol I give credit to anyone who wants to run anything. Think of it as the customer service counter of the web.

04/29/2005 at 3:07 am #1749231Aw come on folks. This isn’t a big conspiracy to “censor the masses”. This is Geocaching and it’s supposed to be fun. In the words of the great Thumper, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”.
We come to these message boards to share our love of geocaching and have some Camaraderie.
Really, if you want to take personal pokes at each other, do it in private emails. I don’t care how you want to lable it, slams are slams. Flaming is flaming. Poking is poking. I don’t care who it’s directed at, if it isn’t nice, take it elsewhere.
Lets all play nice in the sandbox. If you throw sand in someone’s eyes, it hurts. Lets get back to playing with our toys and leave the sand throwing to the GC.com forums.

04/29/2005 at 3:09 am #1749232It was better than the pregnancy one LOL There is nothing like 500 pregnant women thrown together “discussing” vaccinations, circumcision, and breastfeeding.
04/29/2005 at 3:20 am #1749233Ever the optomist…. Although sometimes these message boards hit some rough seas, I would say that overall the waters are usually very calm.

That is exactly what I did. I quoted a certain person and questioned their statements. Offended by that? Well…
Also, I just got home from work and don’t see any email from anyone other than my sister in California. Guess it’s lost in cyberspace.
