Our Pet is “Smokie”, male long haired gray cat. Acts more like a small dog than a cat … has no cat-attitude … sits on the seat of our garden tractor 90% of the time … I mean sits, legs out in front of him, with his back against the seat … for strange to see.

Who invented the phrase “Pet Peeve”?
I think it’s fun to learn where sayings come from … so help me out here.

When I first saw that posting yesterday, I thought we were going to hear about someones dog or something.

The meaning is a personal annoyance. “Pet” as in subjectively specific to a person, not a widely-held social convention. “Peeve” as in something which upsets someone very mildly.

The origin is somewhat unknown. See “A goat to be gotten” at http://www.word-detective.com/060704.html

So … technically to post a message asking if others share your “PET Peeve” is very inaccurate … since if they DO share it, then the PET part is not right, but instead a “Peeve of the Masses” … or is that what happens when it’s hard to find a parking spot at church?

Was that a mass of Peeves or a massive peeve?

This is getting so deep … that it’s making even me wince now!

It’s getting pretty deep … I thought we were not allowed to use shovels?
