When should you drop the big one and log a needs archive? I’ve got a couple examples. One nearby has been disabled and the notes say the owner was planning to move last year. If I log a needs archive will it be removed? Second, there’s another with a couple logs of no find and it’s missing. Am I doing a public service by logging an archive or does etiquette require that I have a go at it first? I should be clear that the logs state in no uncertain terms that the cache is definitely gone. Am I just another nosy busybody or am I doing other cachers a favor?

I guess first we should realize that just because a cache has several “didn’t find” logs, does not mean that it’s missing.

The first step should be to attempt to e-mail the cache owner. If the cache owner has without a doubt abandoned the care and feeding of the cache, then I submit a recommendation to archive the cache. When you recommend archiving, an approver will review the situation and make the final decision. It it helpful to include all valid info in your recommendation. (I.E., owner has not replied to 2 e-mails nor a note posted on the cache page. Cache is missing.)

The only time I would recommend an immediate archive recommendation is if you find that the cache is placed illegally (private property), or property manager or law enforcement requested removal, etc.

I have been known to go through “temporarily disabled” caches and do the same. There is no excuse for a cache to be left disabled for months at a time. Fix it or archive it, it’s the right thing to do.

Okay, I guess in my first example I may have been inappropriately vague. I don’t want to name the cache(innocent until proven guilty), but the log thread starts with “the coffee can is laying in the open with nothing to cover it nearby” to “all we could find is a lid” to “the can is missing and it looks like there’s been development in the area”. This seems to be a pattern with this team’s caches, and I study them pretty often because they reresent 5 of my nearest 20 to home. I’ve e-mailed the owners once on one of their caches and they haven’t changed anything, and I e-mailed them again last night and I’m waiting for them to reply. I don’t want anyone to think I’m being rash, and really want to do this right. All I really want to do is go find some caches
