Does anyone have a Lowrance GPS or have an opinion of one?
I been looking at GPS units that allow me to scroll the map to locations other than where am currently at. Not just zoom out on in. The Lowrance GPS units seem relatively easy to do this with. Just wondering what others thought.
PCFROG05/23/2005 at 6:21 pm #1749899Only thing I’ve heard about “Lowrance” units is that if you upload waypoints/coordinates to them via a cable that it takes a long time … like 5 or 10 minutes … assuming this is true, that would be only a concern if you are attending an event … as everyone will be waiting in line behind you, and their units will upload in about 5 to 15 seconds.
I think most of the more common brands for geocaching (ie. Garmin and Magellan) allow you to “pan” around, once you get up out of the “basic” models. I like being able to use 4-arrows to move around too … not just zooming in/out … which works great on my Garmin. Did I mention that Garmin’s work well.

I also found Amazon.com didn’t have any reviews for both newer and older models, which seems to indicate they aren’t the most popular.
When reading online reviews remember people will complain about something they don’t like much more readily than praise something they do like, since it’s one of the only ways they can “vent” about a product they’re stuck with in many instances.

The Pike Family05/27/2005 at 2:31 am #1749904I own and love a Lowrance Globalmap100. My wife owns a Garmin Legend with maps. We each struggle with the others units as we are accustomed to our own units. I believe that you might want to stick with menus that you are familiar with to be happiest.
07/05/2005 at 4:56 am #1749905Bought a Lowrance ifinder Hunt a few weeks back. Very satisfied with it. Previous unit was a Garmin GPS 12. Use it mainly to get around town.
Main reason I bought it was larger number of tracks and waypoints compared to Magellan Meridian, and can load/save data from/to SD card (Magellan Meridian can, Garmin can’t). Being able to capture a track, save to SD, clear all tracks, capture a new track and save to SD, all without connecting to PC, is a killer feature for me. As is the reverse – being able to selectively load any track I want from SD.
Actually, most of the data transfer is via SD Flash card (standard type, like those used in digital cameras). Even firmware upgrades and loading of maps from CD. Serial port is only for output of live current position data to PC.
