The WGA is about to begin work on geocaching policy recommendations for the DNR. It looks like we’ll hold an open forum on this topic at the Aug. 25 picnic. In the meantime, here are two guidelines we should all follow right away to conform with requests from the DNR:
– Don’t put pocketknifes in caches. If you find one in a cache, take it out and trade it for something else.
– Stop placing caches in State Natural Areas.
For more information, see this page on the WGA site: http://wi-geocaching.com/hide.html08/07/2002 at 10:35 pm #1750043Agreed, but I don’t understand it. The knives, that is. When I was in grade school, we would wear our cub scout and boy scout uniforms the day of a meeting. Uniform included hanging the official pocket knife from the belt. Never had a teacher faint! Just didn’t like the shavings on the floor while whittling down a pinewood racer during class.

08/18/2002 at 4:05 pm #1750045This was a request form the DNR for land under the direction of the DNR, not a statewide recomendation.
But there is nothing wrong with using a little common sense when placing a knife type trinket in a cache. Like everything else in this sport, just use a little common sense and keep the rules to a minimum.quote:

I will try to keep something on hand so I can do this whenever possible. I didn’t feel that it was all that bad, but if non cachers raid it, I would rather not have a weapon in one.
10/10/2003 at 5:04 am #1750047Yes, and when you’re reading “The Little Engine That Could” to your three year old daughter, make sure you skip over the word “jack-knife” in describing the good things boys and girls could want, and hold your thumb over the picture of the pocket knife.
10/27/2003 at 12:24 pm #1750048We foud a pocketknife in one of the caches up here and immediately took it out. I completely agree that they should not be out there. This is a family sport/hobby and I don’t think knives belong in caches.
We live in a different age (yes, I was once a cub scout with the pocketknife too.) As a public high school teacher I personally think the less knives out there the better. Things have changed – look at what four box cutters did on 9/11!
